'USS' HANDS ENZO WARNING EXCLUSIVE MICHAEL REEVES , SWWMEDIA.CO.UK 09:00 - 31 July 2007 Ibf cruiserweight world champion Steve Cunningham has sent a warning to WBO king Enzo Maccarinelli after calling for a unification bout. The Swansea champion wants to face the USS Cunningham for his next match after his impressive destruction of Wayne Braithwaite 10 days ago. But the 31-year-old former member of the US Navy has yet to hear of any offer made by Maccarinelli's promoter Frank Warren. "Enzo better be careful what he asks for," Cunningham warned in an exclusive interview with the Evening Post. "He wants the IBF belt, he does not want Steve USS Cunningham. "Don't say you want Steve 'USS' Cunningham, just say you want the IBF belt - but to get it you must come through me. "I have heard him say that he thinks that I'm beatable - what does that make him? "If I'm beatable then he is 10 times more beatable. "But get his promoter to send my promoter Don King an offer - I'm more than willing to fight." If a unification clash does come off then it will be the chief support to Joe Calzaghe's fight with Mikkel Kessler on November 3 at the Millennium Stadium. While the IBF champion did not see Maccarinelli's impressive all-round display at The Cardiff International Arena, Cunningham is planning to get a DVD of the fight. "I heard he did a good job against Wayne Braithwaite and to do that you have to work hard," Cunningham said. "But let Enzo know this - I am no Wayne Braithwaite. "Any weaknesses he thinks he has seen in me won't be there if we meet. "I'm constantly watching my fights and other people's looking to improve my game." If the bout does happen in November then it will be in front of a crowd of 60,000 partisan Welshmen. But that does not worry the Philadelphia fighter. "The only thing I see when I get in that ring is my opponent," he said. "The 60,000 people can't get in there and help him - if they do then we have a problem. "I'm just like the US Navy going overseas to other countries to defeat their opponents. "I have no problem with going to France (to face WBA/WBC champion Jean-Marc Mormeck) and I have no problem in going to Wales. "I'm the USS Cunningham - a United States warship." Cunningham has yet to defend the title he won from Pole Krzysztof Wlodarczyk at the end of May with a points decision. The father of two had hoped to face Mormeck in his first bout since becoming world champion, but the Frenchman is lined up to face Maccarinelli's British rival David Haye in September. And with Cunningham, like the Swansea champion, wanting to unify the 200lb division, a bout with WBO king would seem to be the logical option for the American. "The cruiserweight division is probably the best in boxing at the moment, but there isn't much money about," he added. "But it is not about the money for me it is about being the king and with the power of God that is what I will be."
I'd like to see that semi-unification fight happen. I'm glad the big fights are finally getting made at Cruiser and guys aren't just sitting on their belts like they used to.
Cunningham should chose his next opponent very carefully, and try to make as much money as possible with his next outing to a ring. His mandatory Huck will surely be able to dethrone him. Cunningham is no match for the German based fighter IMO.
