"Canelo is much more effective at fighting off the backfoot than GGG is."

So why did he lose more rounds, and the fight, in the first fight?

GGG won more rounds in the second, than Canelo did in the first.....So your point make 0 sense.

You're missing the point, GGG didn't choose to fight off the backfoot in the rematch, he was forced to by Canelo's constant in your face attack. In the first fight, Canelo chose to fight off the backfoot and outboxed him.

So how Canelo fought the first fight and how GGG fought the 2nd fight is not close to the same thing. Canelo used more upper body movement, was more consistent at slipping punches and making GGG miss, etc in the first fight. Canelo was backing up and hanging out for long periods of the ropes in the first fight. GGG never went back to the ropes or used his footwork and movement to set traps like Canelo did to GGG in the first fight, but Canelo did force GGG to retreat in the rematch.

And FYI Canelo didn't lose more rounds, or the fight in the first fight. Canelo won more rounds in the first fight than he did in the rematch, but fighting off the backfoot and defensive-oriented boxing is largely under-appreciated so naturally the consensus had Canelo winning more rounds in the rematch due to how he fought by applying constant pressure to GGG which is the style most fans prefer.
