Calzaghe was only an underdog in the USA, everyone else knew he would beat Lacy.

Anybody that upsets the odds will have achieved a good win, but if you are comparing boxers, compiling ATG lists being the underdog is a negative not a positive.

If you are an ATG you will have entered the ring as a strong favourite in virtually ever bout ?

For arguements sake, lets say the greatest ever boxer has yet to be born,
when he finishes his career, he ended up fighting for 20 years with a record of fought 50 won 50, and fought the very best over that period of time, he enjoyed a great amateur career and ever fight he had he was the favourite to win.
Are you trying to say that that fighter would have no respect ?

In fairness i know where you are comng from, you are speaking in 'general' terms, but many of the true greats would fall foul of your generalisation.
What % of his fights would Sugar Ray Robinson have been the underdog.

Splitting hairs now, but if 2 excellent boxers with very similar records fought, the favourite having a slightly better resume, there was no age, no weight or no location advantage, and the result of the fight was a 'fair' draw, i would rank the fighter that was seen as the favourite above the underdog.
I assume in the same situation you would rank the boxer that was seen as slightly inferior as better ?

I don't know for a fact but i am fairly sure that Calzaghe was the bookies favouite in every fight he has had including Eubank, Reid, Lacy, Kessler and Hopkins.

Eubank - old ex champion, fought away from home,Calzaghe young&green first title fight.

Reid - recent ex WBC champion fought away from home, Reid controversially picked in front of Calzaghe for Olympics.

Lacy - billed as the next Mike Tyson, unbeaten belt holder

Kessler - multiple title holder, unbeaten.

Hopkins - ATG, still 80 to 90% prime [as proved against middleweight champ Pavlik], fought away from home.

If Calzaghe was the bookies favourite to win these fights like i believe, it s just a testament to how good Calzaghe is perceived by the bookies/betting public.
This is not a negative its a positive.

In fact whoever Calzaghe would have fought over his long career he would have been favourite, with the exception of Roy Jones Jnr in is prime, who ducked him after asking Eubank how good was he and possibly a prime Hopkins in the states, not convinced that a prime Hopkins in Calzaghe's back yard would have been made the favourite.
If you are talking boxers at the very top of the tree being a favourite is a positive.

Actually he was the betting favorite. Which was a bit stunning.

One betting forum i have just looked at says that Lacy was 5/4 and Calzaghe was 4/6 odds on, with the odds having swung to the British boxer in the last 48 hours.
The thread starter was very excited saying that Lacy at 5/4 was an unbelievably good thing

Try and find the fight with ITV commentary where they will tell you exactly what the odds were

Floyd was a healthy underdog against Genaro Hernandez.
