Most of Calzaghe's KOs came earlier in his career before he won the world title and stepped up the opposition. He can bang, but his power has been diminished by hand injuries and making weight. He's talking about increased power now that he's fighting at light heavyweight so we'll see.
Yeah, Manfredo was about to come back and win the fight. Not. But, point taken, Calzaghe's power has been generally unimpressive since winning the title. But he HAS shown power against Eubank, Sheika, Veit and Mitchell for example. He CAN bang.
If you are talking actual power rather than p4p power its quite difficult to accurately compile a top 10 spanning 4 weight classes, and including 154 is futile. I'll give it a go anyway Abraham Froch Berrio Pavlik Miranda Diaconu Kessler Tarver Bute Woods/Dawson I still believe Abraham has as much raw punching power as anybody in these divisions, the way he knocks guys out cold with single shots is a sure sign. It is the effective use of it that is the problem given his laziness, and people will no doubt point to Pavlik KOing Miranda and Abraham failing to do so. Then I got Froch and Berrio, two huge yet limited punchers... Pavlik I don't believe has the same punch power as the guys above, we are now entering the realms of acculumlation punchers, he beats guys down with thudding shots and relentless pressure Miranda has huge power, but only in one specific shot, the right hand. I had to take that into account, and also the fact his power is virtually redundant when fighting off the backfoot as seen in the Pavlik fight Diaconu's power has been improving of late The rest are boxer punchers, and difficult to seperate. Tarver would be higher in his day, but he's living off a fluke punch, and he's also shot I wouldn't be suprised if Woods/Dawson actually hit harder than some of the above given they are 175lb guys
I keep reading that Bute has a hard punch. :huh He doesn't. His power is good, but he is not a hard puncher, not least because he doesn't sit on his puncher, preferring to go for volume instead. Certainly not Top 15 at 154-175. Don't be confused by his stoppage percentage because that doesn't always correlate with power. Same thing applies to Dawson, for example. People also say: "But Dawson has a higher TKO percentage than Diaconu, so he must hit harder!" This is fallacious reasoning!
Most powerful single punch: Edison Miranda's right hand. He can throw it only charging forward, though, so his offense isn't as effective as that of other great punchers. Miranda, for example, couldn't get the kind of flat-footed KO Julian Jackson did against Herol Graham. Decebel's post above is crucial. Some guys get power from actual force, while others do it with timing or speed. And then you have to factor in their ability to actually land those shots. There are journeymen out there with great right hands, but that's all they have. This entire conversation has to sort of assume you're dealing only with B-fighters and above, and obviously pretty much only those who have been televised.
lol. Mora looks like he hits hard though, he really digs it in. Surprise no one has mentioned Lacy yet. Just a year ago hed be the first name to come up, there were even discussions of him having HW power.
Yeah...I was thinking Lacy...but then I remembered his last two fights...currently, his power is not special at all.
I said Pavlik, but it is most likely a guy you might not know about. There are alot of huge punchers out there who just don't have the skills or experience to showcase their power. Pavlik wouldn't be knocking anybody out if he didn't have the skills to get in position to land his right hand. This is the case for many fighters. Prime Examples --- Tito vs Winky and Lacy vs Calzaghe. They weren't able to showcase their power because they were up against a guy who never allowed them to set and get leverage on a clean shot.
You dont loose power from a 12 round of slaps. So it really is just a case of him facing tougher comp. And yes, manfredo is tougher comp compared to his previous opposition and Manfredo actually has pretty good chin. Stylewise, Lacy shoulda murdered Manfredo...I think The Latin Snake hissssss would UD Lacy.
It wasn't the "slaps". It was the serious shoulder injury! Nothing to do with Manfredo's chin that Lacy lacked snap.
if that shoulder injury is still affecting him, shouldnt he be resting? Surely Lacy would know in his own mind that he cant punch with full power on the bag therefore he should rest it.
