I'm going tbh. In that article I disagree with him on this one. I consider this fight to be a title eliminator that got Moore the right to fight Patterson for the belt. Just like Baker v Holman and Patterson v Jackson. The difference is this one was for 15 rounds.

    Lee Savold vs. Bruce Woodcock
    For the World Heavyweight Championship

We should start a thread of all the Jack Solomons posters billing something "that clearly wasn't" as a World Heavyweight Championship.

    No,No ,and No.
At no time was Johnson supposed to fight Hague.
Johnson was supposed to fight Langford at the NSC his purse to have been £1000 plus one 3rd third of the film rights.Once Champion Johnson announced he wanted $30,000 [£ 6000] to defend his title, the same as Burns had received to defend against him.
The NSC was a private members club and had no authority to declare world titles.
The Hague v Langford fight was billed as for the English title which itself was BS as Langford was a Canadian and therefore, not eligible to fight for the British title.

Hague was the British champion after koing Gunner Moir.
    From CBZ.
Langford was one of the greatest fighters who ever stepped into the ring; He fought successfully in every class from lightweight to heavy, usually against larger and heavier men; During his career, he won the Heavyweight Championship of Mexico and the Heavyweight Championship of Australia

Sam was short in statue but had a long reach; He moved well, used both hands and hit with power - he was a boxer-puncher supreme; Despite (or because of) his rare skills, he never fought for a World Championship; In his later years, he went blind."

I’m just making a general comment and I hope people don’t take this too much to heart but in boxing guys purposefully deceive the papers and have since forever. It wasn’t directed at you @mcvey just that your post made me think about it.

Guys have to fill the pages, they’ve got a job to do and they make stuff up, boxers make stuff up, journalists watching the fights make stuff up, managers make up stuff, everyone involved is usually half way lying for one reason or another.

I can't find a source at the moment but Johnson was supposed to fight Iron Hague on that date. This is why Iron Hague v Langford was a world title fight. Not dissimilar to how a sanctioning body has a "mandatory" fight someone else for their belt if the champ doesn't. Iron Hague v Gunner Moir was not a world title fight. The British title had just been established a few years earlier in 1905 and if this fight was a world title there is nothing that said at this time fights can't be for multiple titles.

The NSC was succeeded by the BBBC that ultimatly became part of the WBC as did the IBU. At this point no one clearly had the authority to name world champions. But these are as close to sanctioning bodies as you had at that time. The 1910s and 1920s were when that really got started.

At this time in history Canadians and citizens of the British Empire were viewed as British people. The fight which apparently was a title defense was against Bill Lang who was Australian. Before the 1900s boxers from the wider British Empire dominated the Commonwealth title opposed to ones from the island of Great Britain. Also citizens of different parts of the British Empire were able to fight for the various regional titles and at times so were Americans with no national ties to said country. Sam McVea fought for the Australian title for example. Langford fighting for the English title was not "BS" even if it were purely an English title fight. Whatever nationality rules existed for fighting for regional belts did not exist yet.

Here is the program for Langford v Lang for all those who want to examine it. It is referred to as the "international championship" and was scheduled for 20 rounds. The reason I call this a title defense is it was Langfords first fight in the UK since fighting Iron Hague and it would be his last one. It is unclear when he lost this status. A few months later Wells beat Iron Hague for the NSC British belt which was the first NSC non world title fight since Iron Hague v Gunner Moir. Langfords next fight in the British Empire would be for the Australian title in late 1911 where he lost to McVea at which point any claim he had would have likely petered out.

When exactly was Johnson supposed to fight Langford? This could be at any time during Johnsons 6 year reign.

Johnson was never supposed to fight Hague.
Later , as champion a defence of Johnson's crown was tentatively scheduled against Billy Wells but the Home Office prohibited it.
The Langford v Lang fight was not for any title.
Johnson was champion for 7 years.
Johnson signed to fight against Langford in Autumn 1908,the fight to take place in early1909.
The NSC did not recognize fights outside their club as being for the National title.
After losing to Langford Hague was ko'd in15 rds by P O Curran ,but because it was not held at the NSC the club refused to recognize Curran, and continued to call Hague British Champion,Hague lost his next two fights to Brits Smith and Sunshine all 3 fights in1910 , but the NSC still recognized his as champ and when he fought Wells in1911,at the NSC they billed it as for the British title.

Billing a fight as for an "International Title," means Jack ****.
I repeat Langford never won a world title ,and he never even fought for one.

Well i know one thing, Joshua has been the best black heavyweight for about 8 years straight. He's beaten heaps of contenders and came back strong after losing to Ruiz and he didn't make a fool of himself in the Usyk rematch. He's made a good fist of things.

I’m glad he’s (mostly?) shaken off his reputation as the second coming of Bruno. He’s a special fighter.
