Currently, who is the best Mexican fighter of All Time and why?

You were schooled FM7, no doubt about it, take solace that we have all had that done to us, some time or other, the clue is to do your research , check your memory, then slowly go about your topic, this isn't meant to patronise you, I am sincere. keep well ( and keep posting )

 

Depends what you value.

Look at the difference between guys like Salvador Sanchez and Canelo.

Old Iron Lungs had a relatively brief career and stayed at one weight. Canelo has become a champ at several weights and is almost 60 fights deep. Going on stats alone (which many do), it seems perfectly reasonable to rate him higher, but when you focus on performances against best opponents (which I do), then Sanchez wins easily.

He had a more boundless talent, largely down to the big difference in stamina. Canelo, cleverly chipping away with counters, would sometimes leave opponents undercooked. It's what Teddy Atlas was getting at when he aired criticism following the Jacobs win. Sanchez, by contrast, overwhelmed and dominated in cinematic fashion. I don't see the same level of greatness in Canelo, and I suspect, once his careers wrapped up - when people don't call you a hater for being critical - that the Golovkin fights will be the rickety rungs to foil his climb up the ATG ladder.

Chavez, Olivares, Sanchez, Barrera, Morales and Marquez all come before him, and in something like that order.

 

I'd also add Saldivar to the list ahead of Canelo.

 

I can think of at least ten-20 Mexican boxers I'd choose over the much overrated Canelo Alvarez.

This list doesn't include the Mex-American fighters like
Deloyhoa, Canizales, D.Lopez, Ortiz, Carbahal, Chacon, Tapia
or Ramos.
Mexico has a very rich history of world class fighters . Some
on this list had a few losses, but that's going to to happen when
facing world class fighters on a regular bases and not
carefully choosing the competition one faces to give yourself
the best chance of winning as Alvarez does.( Straight from Mayweather Jr's
playbook) ........
In my opinion of course.

Canelo is smoke and mirrors. Drug cheat (caught in his 20s and reasonable to suspect he started years earlier and no reason to believe he’s stopped when other fighters in his camp are popping and he’s growing and improving while losing his neck and showing more and more roid rage), too many controversial decisions, catchwwights/re-hydration clauses and some fights that look outright fixed (washed up Kovalev for example), and simply watching there’s nothing overly special about him. His level is quite a bit inferior to an old GGG who IMO was a very good but not great fighter.

Chavez is definitely #1 though the prime and best of Olivares, Zarate, Sanchez taken at their absolute best are in the discussion. Marquez is a combination of great skills and career with longevity and depth. Saldivar too, superb resume. Dominant champ in a great era.

The best of the rest Barrera, Morales, Canto, López. With Canelo I notice it’s a lot of Mayweather fans trying to elevate Canelo to enhance that catch weight win over a green Canelo or fans who felt the sport started recently or simply nationalistic fans or ones who’ve fell for all the traps.

 

Yeah, his resume is great. I think if someone argued his inconsistency and against some losses then they’d sort of have a point. I do think Medel, Pimentel, Rudkin (especially Medel) were very worn by the time they fought him but that’s why he has so many good wins because that type of stuff evens itself out. Olivares resume is deep. I wouldn’t take his bantam best over Zárate’s personally or his feather best against Sanchez, Marquez or Saldivar but when it all comes out in the wash, his career is out in front of all of theirs.

 

I pick Sanchez...I've never seen a more prematurely mature, poised, basically perfect fighter in that weight class, before or since.

Like 60s Ali, SRR, Duran, and Armstrong he was a Boxing Miracle.

 

Oh, he's definitely in the rare air at the top. Canelo doesn't qualify to be mentioned along with him, Chavez Olivares, Saldivar, etc. Different class, different time.

 

I like Chavez.. his skills and underrated power and will to win.. A stubborness not to lose.. Always improved.

Agree there. His resume is far too thin to warrant that high a place. You have to be putting a ton of emphasis on the "eye test" to have him there.

I would have Chavez #1, as well. He gets a lot of grief and some of it is warranted, but he was an excellent aggressor, stuck around for a long time, had some divisional fluidity, and was a two-class Lineal Champion. It's an aside I've used before, but I talked to Ruben Castillo who fought Sanchez, Arguello, and Chavez and he had little hesitation in saying Chavez was the greatest. No word is the gospel, but I can see why he would believe it.
