Honeyghan goes over there and leaves with the undisputed welterweight championship of the world.:smoke http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z1GWZlheMhI http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=APFKGR-Kv8Y http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L6w5q4HphxI http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z3BXQ5Q2C-s
One of the all time great performances by a Brit, Lloyd took it right to Curry that night. Curry was P4P number 1 at the time and totally feared after making short work of Milton McCrory. Im not trying to put a dampener on praise for Lloyd but at this point Curry was playing a dangerous game with the scales and it really came home to roost in this fight, Curry had absolutely none of the brilliance he had showcased previously, partly because Lloyd was at the top of his game but partly because he had to kill himself to make 147. His struggles with weight are well documented, even when he fought Colin Jones in early '85. Im not taking anything away from Lloyd but Curry paid the price for not moving up when his body clearly couldnt make 147 anymore, he learnt the hard way .... Great win for Lloyd though ..
IIRC Marvin Hagler was The Ring P4P number 1 throughout 1986, I'm pretty sure Curry was number 3 behind him and Mike Tyson.
KO Magazine 1986 1. Marvin Hagler 2. Mike Tyson 3. Donald Curry 4. Thomas Hearns 5. Edwin Rosario 6. Azumah Nelson 6. Michael Spinks 8. Evander Holyfield 9. Julio Cesar Chavez 10. Hector Camacho
What I want to know is why people always say that Curry was p4p #1 when Honeyghan beat him, because he obviously isn't with Hagler around! Guess its just us Brits trying to put even more gloss on one of the ATG perfromances from a Brit fighter. :yep
Curry was considered top in the world and many people did think he was the best a prime Curry is one of the best pure boxers ever, my Dad isnt into boxing that much but he knows Curry was some fighter
Remember that was part of the year end poll.... Tyson undoubtedly finished #2 because of the Berbick bout, but many thought Tyson was too good to be true pre Berbick (the fight was pick-em, a fortnight beforehand, although Tyson walked into the ring a warm favorite). Curry went into the Honeyghan bout as second to only Hagler in the world, and many of us figured the Cobra was the one to beat the Marvelous one!
Thats a good point about Tyson/ Curry TBooze!! Rosario is getting too much love at number 5 IMHO on the back of losing to Camacho and demolishing Bramble.
Hindsight, yes Edwin was overrated; but pre Rosario, remember, Camacho was a media darling, and although the fight was close on ten point must, there was only one moral winner and Macho Man that night, and it was not Hector.
