It was KO not The Ring, (unlike today, they were then rivals) and it was a not just the magazine, but an aggregate score of boxing experts, that made the list... Plus it was polled post Honeyghan, that is how highly Curry was rated. But as previously stated, I was one of them, who figured Don to be the one to beat Hagler.
That list was from KO Magazine, with Hagler cleaning out 160 and beating Hearns and Mugabi most people thought Curry hadn't done enough to unseat Hagler from the number 1 spot.
To those who saw him Don was King (and that is a very clever pun) , Hagler was decent but nowhere near the same level (IMHO)
Of course not, but if you didn't recognise his magnificence then you must have been blind :good...Hagler was no where near his class...another county.
100% spot on...........the 80's in pretty much every division was superb...domesticaly it was great time with some great tear ups.....:good
Curry was amazing for the couple of years but I think most people who compiled those lists felt that he hadn't done enough to shift Hagler from the spot he's had for the last 2 or 3 years. On performances he probably deserved #1, in those days he was fighting more often than Hagler for a start, but thats not how people who do these lists tend to work.
Is that right Gaz ?? I think you could be right, Curry was definately PFP 1 at some point, it could have been a period in '85 .. Tyson number 2 ?? Having heavyweights on a PFP list is always bull**** ..
I'm not sure about Tyson but (at the risk of inflaming Icemaxs ire again!!) I think most people had Hagler as number 1 from Leonards first retirement until 1987. Curry was undoubtably putting in great performances around that time but it wasn't enough to kick Hagler off the top spot on the back of the Hearns and Mugabi wins (after he'd cleaned out 160 previous to that).
Ive just read some previous posts and is it correct that Don Curry was never actually P4P number 1 ?? I could have sworn he was top dog at some point, i bow to your greater knowledge on this subject but i always thought he was top at some point .. Hagler was a dominant guy though so i guess thats a decent pick as number 1 from '84 to '86 ...... I did like Curry though, he was a beautiful fighter to watch, so fluid ..
I wouldn't swear on it (and it obviously depends on who's list you use) but I don't think he was ever the number 1 P4P. I think if you ask "On performances was he the best P4P boxer in 1984-86?" then then the answer is probably "yes" but those P4P lists are compiled with a fighters entire career in mind and Hagler always had a head start over Curry in that regard.
Those who thought they were in the know (like me) clearly saw that Cobra Curry could kick Hagler's arse, post HamshoII..... Hell, I was that confident, I could see that aged 12.:blood Most sane boxing fans, saw Hagler as the best, he had pedigree; class was permanent, form temporary, and hindsight played to that.
