I think curry was never the same after the milton mccrory fight. the weight draining really eroded him. But i still see mike beating him late if they fought in 1985
If Curry fought McCallum at that time, maybe he could've pulled it off, but it would've been probably his toughest matchup at that time.
Curry was scheduled to fight McCallum a year later in the summer of 1986 on the Top Rank promoted "Triple Hitter" card. Curry elected to remain at welterweight and defend his title, and the scrapped fight was replaced with Hearns-Medal.
Curry beats Mccallum in 1985 if he had moved up.The only reason why Curry didn't move up in the first place was that he was ADVISED not to by Mike Trainer. This lead to alot of end fighting between Curry and his manager David Gorman as Gorman knew Curry was having a hard time making welter.
shows how lightly regarded mccallum was at that time. a fight like this should not be on the undercard of anybody or any fight this would of increased the odds of him winnin
McCallum wasn't lightly regarded by people "in the trade", most boxing fans knew how good he was. He just wasn't box office. When they fought Curry seemed to be walking away with the fight until he got caught.
i don't know about that. mccallum was getting in the odd body shot or two that would of slowed donald down later in the fight
Other than the KO sequence I havn't watched that fight for years but my recollection is that Curry was winning reasonably comfortably. It was quite a while ago and my mind could be playing tricks though.
Curry wasn't dominating McCallum by any means. He was slightly getting the better of him, but not by much. On a round by round basis he was winning, however not authoritive enough within the rounds with his work to be regarded as "walking away with the fight".
LOL!! yep, maybe "walking away" was a (total) overstatement!!! I think Curry was 4-0 or 3-1 up and I remember thinking he was going to win right up until he got caught though.
I thought the first round was even, the second round went to McCallum, and Curry got the better of the next two rounds and was continuing to get the better of McCallum in the 5th before getting chinned. I do think Curry was capable of beating McCallum in '85.
Curry's effort against McCrory was one of the sharpest performances I've ever seen. Curry was still good in '87, but I don't think Curry at his very best gets caught with that shot. I think Curry would've outpointed McCallum in '85.
Curry would have stopped Mccallum in 1985.He almost dropped him when they fought and this wasn't Curry at his best. Mccallum was looking rather ordinary up until landing th ko punch when he fought Curry. And lets not forget the swelling on Curry's eye from a headbutt(accidental)which caused him to lean back(although Curry had started to do that in other fights) Curry in his prime had an excellent defense-he was hard to hit.His downfall was forcing himself to make welterweight and also his power-he started to just overpower his opponents instead of using his considerable boxing skills. He was picking Mccallum apart until getting knocked out.
