He stayed at welterweight for too long. Rumour has it that Curry was struggling with the weight limit as far back as 1982. When he fought defended his title against Jones in Birmingham three years later he was struggling with the weight as it was reported in the British press while he was in the UK.

His manager, Dave Gorman, wanted him to move up in weight after he defeated McCrory when he he unified the titles. However, Curry was stubborn as he enjoyed being one of only two undisputed champions in boxing. The other being Marvin Hagler. It was an identity he enjoyed and wanted it to last as long as possible and stayed at the weight too long.

Curry also insisted where he trained for the Honeyghan fight. He switched his normal training camp to a hot climate. I can't mind where he trained for the fight, Florida I think. Gorman said it wasn't a good idea as fighters are animals that are not use to change and are fimiliar to their normal surroundings. Gorman also wasn't keen on the heat as he reckoned it sapped Curry's strength.

Thanks for the reply Robbi. I read they were looking at maybe matching Curry up with Hagler if the Honeyghan fight went to plan. In your opinion how do you see that one going if they had fought ? Could you see a scenario where Curry had a chance ? Or would Hagler walk right through him ?

Well if Curry did indeed beat Honeyghan and fought Hagler during sometime over the first half of 1987 then the version he would have faced would be the one Leonard beat. The match would have been made at middleweight. I can't see Curry beating Hagler. It would have been a two weight jump against a naturally strong middleweight. An eroding one, but still enough to cope with Curry. See the problem for Curry here is that he doesn't have the movement and quick flurries like Leonard did to out-score Hagler. Curry liked to fight within range and sometimes inside as he was good either way. Hagler would find him after a few competitive rounds.

I do remember this one. Curry looked awesome, one of the quickest punches I've ever seen toward the end. I don't think Milton was at his best, did'nt look like he was trying very hard. Hearns and Curry would have been a good one with Hearns outboxing and Knocking out Curry before too long. Donald was quite awesome though

i think the maccarinelli - haye is a similar thought and outcome on the betting front.
both men coudl beat each other no doubt but curry had some great victorys before hand and was seen to be in his absolute prime, while so was mcCrory .

haye maccerinelli to me is a good example of how it was close but also decisive in the pre fitgh and actual match

I also have heard McCrory had some weight problems around this time, maybe just a rumor.
