Nah. Up until McCallum, Curry looked sharp and strong. He was easily controlling both Santos and Montogomery (the latter whom he outclassed and beat up) from the centre of the ring, making both of them foul themselves out. I haven't seen much of him after his loss to McCallum, but there's talk of him going on the coke etc so that might account for him losing that physical presence more than the extra pounds.
Curry would outwork Benitez in both fights. He might just knock Wilfred out at WW. Curry was still good until he was knocked out by McCallum. He was a more dynamic fighter than Benitez.
interesting fight. I can see Curry winning at 147 and Benitez at 154, where Wilfred was very comfortable at the weight and found some of his power, and where Curry at 154 was not as comfortable.
I don't know what the difference was between 147 and 154, perhaps it was coke, but the difference in domination was there for anyone to see. Yes, he might have been "controlling" a Montgomery or a Santos. He was physically dominating a Jones, Larocca, and a McCrory at 147. That's what I'm talking about.
I think this. Curry was truly stellar at 147. You'd need more than radar to defend some of what he could produce. I think he'd win on points and probably score a KD or two. At 154, he just wasn't the same. He didn't handle the pounds well. Benitez reverses the edge.
Of the fights I've seen of Curry at 154 (Montgomery, Santos, McCallum and Norris) I think his strength held up very well. It mostly let him do what he needed to. Of course, he had no answer at that stage to the combination of workrate and power of Norris, but still he held the centre of the ring quite well. Montgonery he did actually dominate. He snatched his leg after just a couple of rounds of brutal body punches. Santos seemed to hold up better, but obviously also felt the need to headbutt himself out of there. I'd not dispute that he was even more physically imposing at WW, but in the fights I've seen there's nothing to suggest that he was outmatched physically at 154. He seemed just fine, even if he was lacking a bit of stamina against Norris.
Look at the legs of Curry at 147 and compare them to the version at 154. At welter he had springs in those legs and was always perfectly balanced. Those legs were never going to put him in the position to fire off a perfect shot like he did against McCrory. At 154 it was a different ballgame and he was far less effective and it's clear to see in the Rosi/Jacquot/Lally/Acquino/even the Hardrock Green bout which may have been his best outing at 154. Curry's legs first showed deterioration in that Honeyghan bout & they never got that good again.
Curry's legs did not have the bounce as much after Honeyghan, but I always thought it was mainly weight and a little bit confidence and not wear and tear. At 147 he had more effect on guys and they would be backing up more and he would have to step forward more to follow them to be in position to punch. At 154 they stayed right there with him more, so he was more of a sitting target as well when they would throw punches back, and this stance eventually caused him problems if he was not moving forward and finding openings. This flaw of Curry's of keepings his legs far apart was not a problem at welt. where he was so fast and had good punching, but when he moved up he started to have the head butt DQs and guys not going anywhere.
Curry has a lovely way of feinting in that he slightly moves forward draws back then fires. I see this giving Benitez hell, cause Benitez was all about reflexes and I can see him falling for these feints hook, line and sinker. Saying that Benitez dealt well with Leonard who was a great technician.
I'll take Curry at 147. Close tactical fight, but Curry squeeks by being the busier fighter, especially with the jab. My favorite version of Benitez was the 154 version vs Hope, Duran, and even Hearns. I think for a brief time his brilliant skills merged with a peak physical maturity. He was strong at the weight. Curry was not as durable at 154 and he was just not as good. He fought well against McCallum, was winning, but was also getting busted up and made a terrible error. Had the KO not occurred, I think there's a good chance McCallum breaks him down later in the fight anyway. I'd actually give the 154 version of Benitez a chance at stopping the 154 version of Curry late.
