Not sure if this has been posted before on here - but for those who haven't seen it - this is a mighty good read especially the bits toward the end of the article about the comparisons with various fighters of his era etc - suppose all the pricks like powderpuff puncher and pachilles will come on here spouting about him knowing nothing about fighting - but for real classic fans enjoy http://www.phillyboxinghistory.com/.../20100201_sheppard_hatchetman_alkazoff_01.htm
The author of that piece shared a cell with Curtis for a few years 'n was a frequent ESB Classic poster.
I just read it...a damned good article..I've always wondered about this Hatchetman...he isn't just a sidebar to the career of Joey Maxim anymore..really impressive guy.
Eddie Kapphan, who managed both Sheppard and Harry Bobo, thinks that a sparring session in which Curtis knocked Harry out cold may have led to his premature death years later. According to Kapphan, from that point on Bobo had complained of headaches and had been having them really bad just before his death. Charley Burley's manager (ONE of them anyway!) blamed one of Burley's losses to Ezzard Charles on a sparring session Charley had with the Hatchetman. Said Burley took a horrific body-beating during said session.
Noticed you mentioned something about "your book"?? Any chance you could PM me about it? When are you being published - how can I get a copy when it comes out etc etc
there is no record of his death, so he could still be out there. I had a quick look on the net and one page says that like a lot of people of his era his birth was never officialy recorded either so outside of boxing and prison records he is hard to trace.
I was impressed by Sheppard as a fighter already but even more impressed by him as a man after reading the article.
No problem. It's a pictorial history of Pittsburgh boxing. Not sure when it will be published, but it will. Not quite sure when I'll be done as I still have some boxer's families to contact (I'll be with Billy Conn's son and Mose Butch's nephew this weekend). I'll keep posted anyone who is interested :good
In the 3/2/1942 issue of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette sports writer Al Abrams claimed to have seen Sheppard's draft registration card and that the Hatchetman's real name(at least on the card) was James Roberts. Maybe if someone could look him up under that name we could find out something?
