I suspect most of the trash talk about Stevens is based mostly on his extremely distasteful pre-fight conduct. People are right to say that Stevens corner was absolutely justified in stopping the fight, and no Stevens should absolutely not have continued to take that punishment and risk his health. He is still a brave, game and able fighter. But by the same token, Stevens shouldnt have been making coffins and talking about killing people. Some level of blowback to be expected especially after taking a whooping. Talking yourself up and sayin your gonna get a KO and such is cool and to be expected. Hopefully Stevens is more tasteful in the future, but works just as hard at his training. Abel probably was not talkin out his arse when he said Stevens beats anyone at MW not named GGG as long as he keeps his training and conditioning at that level.
so if he didnt make the tombstone then its okay to quit in the fight? stevens took something like eight unanswered shots in the last round backed up on the ropes against a known puncher who holds the highest ko percentage in mw history. he was done, with no hope, and a good corner stoppage
I think it's fair to say that he did quit. Was it a cowardly move? No. He wasn't in the fight anymore, was only going to be taking career threatening damage, and had no chance of winning. It was the smart and sane thing to do. This is a sport after all people. What you can say however is that Stevens got destroyed, the fight was a lot more one sided than most people here think, as a general boxing match it wasn't much of a contest. Sure he probably lasted longer than most expected but since when is that a meter of success. He got tooled, put up a pretty shitty performance and I don't really think he deserves much of the praise he's getting after the fight he fought.
His corner knew him well enough to know that he was saying he didn't want anymore. Non verbal communication dude, look it up.
Would not be surprised if throwing in the towel was not "secretly discussed" before the fight. I can't believe that his Curtis's corner really believed he had more than a puncher's chance.
So his corner had to know him well to know what he wanted just by his body language, but you could decipher it without ever meeting the guy?
Oh dear... lets just say it was pretty clear enough for everyone to see that he wanted out, the ref the corner the commentators and the viewing public. But lets play your inane game shall we... His corner saw his body language the same way we did, and didn't try to push him to fight on like some corners do even when it's a lost cause. Ie, they knew him well enough that he wasn't just discouraged or lost motivation but he had lost the will to fight on. In other words he quit. The corner's reaction to Stevens' body language and Stevens' subsequent behavior told us that he didn't want no further part. Simple really.
The fight was one sided, but think you're being harsh to say that Stevens' performance was "shitty". He got himself out of difficulty in a couple of rounds by punching back and landing some decent shots on Golovkin. And he did this after he was dropped very heavily in the second round. By rights, he should have been obliterated in the round that followed, and the fact that wasn't indicates is worthy of praise in and of itself. Stevens did about as well as he could given what he was up against and given what he had to work with. I think that's all that most people here are saying with regard to his performance.
With Magomed in the hospital at the moment and Golovkin being such a noted puncher it's rather inappropriate to criticize Stevens for wanting to put his long term health above his ego. He took a lot of hard shots and fought back from being hurt and even dropped. Going out for another round would have only meant he would have taken more punishment. He had no chance of winning at all, not even a punchers chance as Golovkin was walking through his best shots.
I thought Stevens showed a ton of heart getting up from the kd and tagging GGG at times, coming forward through fire at times. What the hell are you guys even talking about? He performed a lot better than I thought he would and I will be interested to see Curtis vs some of the other middleweights. He gave us an entertaining fight. Yes, in the end, he got physically beaten down, but he definitely came to fight and he definitely tried to win until there wasn't much left of the guy. And I am a fan of GGG. Sure Curtis talked some bull****, but you have to separate that from the reality of what we saw in the ring. Curtis was impressive to me, even in losing. He came to fight, save all the quitter and coward **** for guys that really do quit early, and find some bull**** way out of a fight rather than face adversity. Curtis gave us what he had and kept trying to win. Respect.
