That he was the only fight ever to stop Joey Maxim in Maxim's 115 fights and 29 losses, in one round none the less. Figured I'd make a Shepard thread with the movie influenced by him coming out.
As I understand it Shepard caught Maxim cold ,it happens 1st rd kos have to be looked at closely, sometimes a guy will go over from a shot that he shows no reaction to later in a fight ,when he is properly warmed up,Shepard was a dangerous puncher, thats why they called him the "Hatchet Man",but Maxim outpointed him in 2 other fights. The film might be interesting,as long as they dont imply he was robbed of holding a title ,like the Hurricane pic.
But Maxim was never caught cold before or after. It's pretty clear to me he didn't make a habit of letting it happen. I think it's impressive that Shepard managed it.
According to Rocky Alkazoff, who wrote that great piece on Curtis Sheppeard over on CBZ, Sheppard claims he fought a lot of those fights "wearing the 'cuffs". Sheppard was a monstrous puncher. Archie Moore mentioned him as a brutally hard puncher. With all the guys Moore fought you would have to be a special puncher to get a mention.
hatchetman was one of the hardest punchers of that era, rated in RING magazines top 100 punchers of all time. Walcott rated sheppard as one of the hardest heavywieght punchers he ever fought. Moore called sheppard THE hardest puncher he ever fought, ill try to find the exact quote. Sheppard-Lee Q murray had some wars together. Murray was a top boxer puncher. Sheppard claimed Lee Q murray would beat holyfield and bowe. for what ever thats worth.
Well if you are the only one to ko a guy who went in with men like Walcott,Charles,Moore,Murphy, and Patterson ,it has to be impressive ,imo,I was just saying I treat 1 rd kos with caution.
