Seeing that most people earn that every couple of months pre tax, he cannot have earnt well out if the game. He also says he couldn’t afford to go on holiday as he wasn’t paid on time. Surely he had some money saved from his football career?

Paying a fighter late because you are seriously struggling financially is not ripping them off.

That’s a ridiculous way to look at it. Don’t put on fights if you can’t afford to pay the fighters. The problem is he has the money but won’t pay.

Boxers need to be better advised. Promoters are taking a risk that the finances of a promotion don't add up (in which case they haven't done their job) and it's quite possible they will go bust in the process. Going to court to get paid when there's nothing in the pot, just makes boxers poorer still.

Get the money bonded up front and let the promoter take the risk properly.

 

Promoters should have to have a bond with BBBofC and adequate insurance to cover issues if fighters not getting their purses in full, on time.

 

Exactly. I was in a boxing gym years ago and heard first hand about cheques bouncing then we'll down the line getting installments.
