The problem is that companies promote fights, not individuals. Warren (for example) could presumably have paid Calzaghe but Sports Network couldn't - and legally the two are not the same.

Happens regularly with carpet shops for example - take on too much stock, realise the game's up then transfer the stock from Carpet Wise to Carpet World. Legally, if not morally, sound.

This is why legal entities exist, to protect entrepreneurs from risk. Now - you could argue Calzaghe might have sued Warren personally since inability to pay the full amounts might be negligence, Warren might argue that the market didn't want to fund it. But it would be yet another court case to fund.

I get what you are saying and understand how deals are structured through companies with no personal recourse to the promoter.

The point I was making is that the job of the promoter is to pay the fighter once the fight happens. Warren has shafted fighters throughout his career. Like you said in another post, the responsibility ultimately lies with the boxer to have the correct team in place to ensure they are well protected but in the thread example if you are making £14K you aren’t going to hire a top legal team really unless you plan on losing money

Right, so in any other sensible sport the participants would form a union and pool the costs of things like that. For all their faults, footballers were prepared to go on strike to preserve their deal that funded players at all levels to have pensions, legal advice and all the things a good union would provide.
