How would you rate Cus D'Amato as a trainer?

IMO, Cus gets overrated as a trainer because of Tyson, when many of Tyson's best performances (Berbick, Spinks, Thomas, and Holmes) were AFTER Cus died.

And besides Patterson and Tyson, Cus didn't train anyone worth a **** except for MAYBE Jose Torres. There's a reason Cus didn't train another world champion for almost 30 years after Patterson and Torres, and it's not just because he stood up to the IBC.

And let's be honest, Tyson would have won a world title no matter who trained him. He was that talented.

He is a bit overrated but there is no doubt he forgot more about boxing than most will ever learn.

He trained Graziano as an amateur but they then split up,wonder how Rocky would have done with him in the long run.

Totally disagree. There's a world in which a shitty trainer observed his power, speed, and chin, said "good enough to make me some money", and sent him out there to eat punches until he could land a KO shot. He'd have been a shorter, faster, more durable Earnie Shavers.

Cus had the exact right style to teach him to maximize his genetic gifts, minimize his genetic limitations.

You don’t just fluke your way to having two heavyweight world champions. When you consider Atlas his protege also trained a heavyweight champion so there is obviously something there

That's three HOF fighters and indication he was a top trainer. Also the young Tyson has issuses controling fear. Cus taught how to control it. Had cus lived Tyson might had stayed on course as he demanded respect. Without him, Tyson ends up in prison as a youth. Boxing saved him.

You should hear him talk boxing with Ali. Not overrated.

I think Cus had alot to do with instilling a particular mindset into his fighters which was highly successful.
He went against the norm - other trainers might have seen Tyson as to short and small as a heavy where Cue saw a fast incredibly strong fighter capable of closing the distance quickly through head movement.
Cuz had three world champions and like someone pointed out you might be able to get lucky ONCE but not three times.

What’s overrated about him? Three champions of the world. People I don’t think understand just how amazing that is. No trainer who actually brings up a world champion is overrated- it depends actually how people think of him?

Are they saying he’s the greatest thing in boxing and could make a woman heavyweight champion of male boxing? I don’t think he’s held in a higher esteem then guys like Steward. Miller for instance who trained Toney knew more about boxing then a lot of guys who had a lot more champions for example so it’s not really an easy thing to measure.
