Am i the only one who thinks Cus was epic? I'll start, please add some. "To see a man beaten not by a better opponent but by himself is a tragedy. "You got to be smart you got to be clever and not get hit and when your able to do this your a fighter" "I believe a man dies when he no longer wants to live" "The hero and the coward both feel the same thing, but the hero uses his fear, projects it onto his opponent, while the coward runs. It's the same thing, fear, but it's what you do with it that matters." "When two men step into the ring, one and only one deserves to win. When you step into the ring, you gotta know you deserve to win. You gotta know destiny owes you victory , cause you trained harder than your opponent. You sparred harder. You ran farther." Cus D'Amato
Yeah, cus was brilliant. Torres: When Cus brought Mike to me and told him that I was a world champion. Mike was very shy, he had his head down and said "I want to be a world champion like you one day" said Tyson. Few months later I went to see Mike Tyson train, and I was shocked by what I saw. I said to myself there's no one that can beat this guy. He was so fast and powerful. I told Cus D'Amato, this guy is going to be the youngest heavyweight champion and that's what happened. I was with Cus D'Amato for years my father loved him even my mother, wife and family. I made one million, two hundred thousand in my Boxing career. How much do you think Cus D'Amato took, Ike? Ike: Nothing! Torres: You're 100% right. Cus D'Amato didn't take a dime from my money. He was entitled to 1/3% of the purse as manager, 10% as trainer but he took nothing. In fact, when I was getting married, Cus D'Amato paid for my wedding and everything we wore or used. "A boy comes to me with a spark of interest. I feed the spark and it becomes a flame. I feed the flame and it becomes a fire. I feed the fire and it becomes a roaring blaze."
My favorite one. No one could psychologically prepare a fighter like Cus did. Ali went to him when he was shook before fighting Foreman and it worked for him.
Cus was definately a timeless genius, he had a great eye for potential, that's why he got rid of Teddy Atlas.
There was another side to him. There was a story that a sixteen year old Mike came to Cus shy and worried that girls wouldn't like him. Cus got up, walked out of the room and re-entered moments later with a baseball bat. "You'll need that to fight of the women that are chasing you when you are HW champion of the world." The thing is, for all his undeniable brilliance, Cus handled Mike badly. He needed more discipline that your average kid, not more.
Huh? Think I get what you're saying that. It's hindsight though. Maybe valid, but we have to look from the perspective that Cus didn't have a lot of time so he couldn't risk losing this asset. Then again, it also depends how much we listen to Atlas on the issue... or Rooney for that matter. Cus was genius though, no doubt.
"To see a man beaten not by a better opponent but by himself is a tragedy" I like this quote ..Cus was a genius .. Here is the Cus and Ali [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YrWlHDYDkjg[/ame]
I don't see anything wrong with that story. An older guy having some fun describing how women act to a younger guy who's looking up to him.
Apparently Cus told Ali that Foreman didnt fear Ali's power and that Ali had to nail him right in the chin with his hardest lead right hand in the first round.
