I remember during the Mike Tyson documentary Tyson mentioned that Cus always thought the the best way to fight against Marciano was to actually engage him head on rather than trying to box and move. I was wondering what you all thought about this strategy against Marciano since a few threads on him have popped up already.

Cussy was impressed with Don Cockel taking the fight to Rock.

Better have a good chin, great conditioning, and pack some "heavy hands" yourself.

Otherwise, you are going the hear the ref counting "ten" over you.

Makes sense considering he beat some of the best boxers and slicksters in the history of the world. He showed against Walcott and Charles that outboxing him over the distance is a daunting task, but he didn't beat a top end puncher/swarmer the quality of those two. Not his fault obviously, just that the best fighters of his era were more technical.

I'd say I agree with Cus on this to a certain degree. Impossible to tell for certain.

Yep, like the time Rex Layne slugged it out against Marciano and he went on to Ko Marciano, never mind Marciano landed a great right head and counted Layne out.

Than there was the case with Cockell who battle back, but he did lose 8 of 9 rounds on all 3 score cards??

Than, well unless your Foreman, fighting back is not a good ideal imo.

Well Rocky's a top ten and arguably top 5 heavyweight of all time, I don't think Cus made the statement meaning that any good puncher/swarmer could beat Marciano.

More that a truly great swarmer or puncher would have a stylistic advantage that could be exploited and be the difference in a battle of greats. Marciano certainly showed in his winning efforts against Jersey Joe and Charles that being a good technical fighter or slickster isn't the best style to beat him.

    MuchMoore,

I think he proved in the Rex Layne fight a strong slugger/mauler is definitely not the way to beat him..no? I think a fighter like Ali with speed movement jab and range has the best chance to beat him.

I do too. I don't see how it's practical trying to suffocate a short 68 inch HW swarmer-slugger. If by swarm him, get your punches in and get out... it's an idea, but high risk.

Go up to the class of forward movers like Tyson and Frazier would be an entirely more competitive scenario. These two would fight him head on. Foreman walking forward would be pretty tough too.

I'm sorry, but I have to disagree with Cus on this one.

Standing and trading with Marciano was, in my humble opinion, SUICIDE.

All it took was one good Susie Q from Marciano in the middle of trading with him and out you'd go.

    Ya.

The difference between a Rex Layne and a Foreman or Frazier is tremendous. Like I said in my previous post, it would take a great fighter to exploit this possible stylistic disadvantage of Marcianos because Marciano is himself a great fighter and isn't going to struggle too much with a Rex Layne.

I t would be interesting to see how Marciano would do with the likes of Foreman, Frazier and Tyson. Marciano never met bruisers like these 3 during his reign. One of the raps against Rocky is that he never met a puncher in his own class (or slightly above for that matter). With these 3 men he would be. Could he field bombs from these men without being stopped? Could he honestly hit hard enough and fast enough to drop a beast like Foreman who has a considerable size advantage and a chin to boot? It's too bad we couldn't build a time machine and match Rocky with the likes of these men because it would be fascinating to find out...and fun to watch as well.

There is no way that Cus could know this. Cus had many fighters other than Tyson including Kevin Rooney. One would think it was the sharper pinpoint punchers and good defensive fighter that would beat Marciano. Rex Layne won the battle of pressure vs Bob Satterfeild (Satterfeild had KO'd Big Cat Williams,Bob Baker and Dominated and dropped Nino Valdez) Layne passed the test vs Bob S. but tried this tactic vs Rocky and failed, he was brutally KO'd Marciano severed his teeth at the numbs and KO'd the tough Layne.

The peekaboo style that Cuz taught his fighters was mainly to put pressure on a fighter. Im am not sure if Kevin Rooney was under Cus at the time but he is fighting Peekaboo and putting Pressure on Alex here but this tactic was not always successful, it did not work for Patterson vs Liston, Torres vs Dick Tiger and Rooney below

Well I'm happy for Patterson that he did not meet Marciano after Rocky's bout with Moore ... he would have been destroyed ...

Then again, it's not like Rex Layne is the highest measuring stick for that kind of fighter, now is he?
