to me, they are. the reason is as simple as it is Logical: they work around the Physics. if you employ orthodox Boxing technique, you know the stuff 99 percent of all Amateur Trainers teach you, the more physically guy will Always win. if both guys do the same Thing, the faster, taller, harder hitting guy will Always win. but thats where the cutie Comes in: he works around those disadvantages by using his Brains. he gives his opponents angles and different Looks. if the orthodox guy is the rembrand, he doesnt get into a naturalistic drawing contest with him cause he knows he´ll come out second best. so he throws a picasso at him…….totally taking the master of his game. and in the End, walks away with the win. to me, that is the true Beauty of the sweet science. so here it is: "HOORAY FOR CUTIES"!!!!!!!!!
I never thought much of the so called punchers chance. To me it seems more that a cutie always has a chance.
Love the shout out for Gypsy Joe....one of my pop pops favorites. I just missed his career unfortunately he retired a year before I was born
i disagree on your first Point...…..but i totally get what you are trying to say. the reason the cutie Always has a Chance is cause your really cant prepare for him. you can prepare for a Puncher.....thats no Problem (like staying at Long range or totally in close), but the cutie is someone who Always adapts. you cant really prepare for something that adapts to you, thuss making cuties a real headache to fight.
I was born in the Olney section. Pretty bad now to put it mildly. I live in the Burbs outside of NE Phila now
I had a few guys at work that were from North Phila. There long retired now but they were friends with guys like Briscoe and Watts. My friends older brother used to spar guys like Franklin and Braxton. Some interesting opinions from him.
I feel that goes for any fight or fighter especially the great ones. The great ones set the tone and make you fight their fight. Whenever I see two good fighters going at it whomever makes the other fight their game usually wins . Whomever can force their will on the other despite natural skill set.
Cool we might need to do a philly golden age thread sometime. My Pop pop used to take me to the Blue horizon all the time and when money allowed the old spectrum. I grew up loving those guys with Willie the worm still my all time favorite boxer
Willie was a good friend of my neighbor where I bought my first home in Roxborough. I got to chat with Willie on a couple occasions on the front porch. As nice a guy you could ever want to meet. Of course I lost the autograph I got from him.
