What's the problem with professional boxers who are unable to implement this basic maneuver? Now I realize some fighters aren't easily trapped, or cut off... but some fighters don't even ATTEMPT to cut off the ring. That's why I don't blame fighters that move a lot, or "run", it's not running... it's This content is protected BOXING...but.. if you don't like it... DO SOMETHING about it. If Rigondeaux was moving too much... blame Donaire for not trapping him. Cotto was running towards the end of the fight? Well then Pacquiao... cut the ring off, instead of putting up your hands like you don't know what to do.
Simple cutting off the ring isn't as simple as it looks and it's not something that can be learned over night. It takes smarts and skill to effectively know how to cut the ring.
I have said this for a long time know, skills are diminishing across the board. people who think that since athletes are getting better that automatically translates into better boxers are kidding themselves. Only a handful of old school fighters exist today, that could possibly fight in any era. I hope that this is only a short term trend but in reality it has been happening for about 20-30 years now
at people saying why don't boxer just cut the ring off. It's not as simple as you think when the other guy have skills and he ain't planning to fight but just run. You have to worry about him throwing punch at you and he's also moving at the same time, one basic feint and he's gone so you have to start all over.
Rigo's 400+ amateur fights had a lot to do geography of that fight. I'm sure Nonito has many tactics on how to cut the ring and trap his opponent, the problem was that he was in with a guy who had probably seen them all and knew exactly how to counter them.
Look at a lot of guys now. Guys like Pac and Donaire for example they're so caught up in koing guys and getting shots off they just follow guys around that they don't have the discipline that it takes or the smarts to properly cut off the ring. Watch a prime JCC or JLC in action as to how to properly cut off the ring. Educated footwork anticipating where your opponent wants to go and stopping him from going there leading them to where you want them to go instead of where they want to. When done correctly it's beautiful to watch and highly skillful.
One thing in Donaire's defense even a boxer that is adept at cutting off the ring would have problems doing it against Rigo who's very smart and has great footwork and instincts. Hell even JCC who was the master at it struggled against Pea at cutting off the ring at times.
I have asked about how to cut off the ring before and the basics is to move forward, left or right in the attempt to trap your opponent to the corner. What would be the technique and term for not getting trap in the corner is interesting to know if others can share.
Rigo made Donaire look like a beginner in there it was amazing Me like most Rigo fans in 2012 said that Nishioka Arce Mathebula Vazquez jr were good wins but not in Rigos league and Donaires biggest supporters scoffed I think Donaire was getting used to guys just falling down and being afraid of his power and he was able to get by on power and size and general reflexes Rigo showed him a level that he has never seen before
