Roll up, roll up! As predicted the big weekly Matchroom free ticket giveaway has begun. As with almost all of their UK shows, this has today been listed on the usual seat filler site, being given away for free. The good news for any one thinking of going is that as this show has struggled so badly, there are literally masses & masses of currently empty seats meaning anybody that wants 1 (or more If going with friends/family) should get plenty. Another free night out for boxing fans......Happy days.
Sold 1500 tickets. The ticket sales for Galahad v Martinez were bad but the sales for this one are terrible.
It's nearly all their shows now, I think its because since they moved from sky no casuals know who their fighters are or even that the shows are on. I asked one of my mates earlier if he fancied going as it was free, his response when I told him the main event was 'who' . No idea what they are going to do in the UK when their current crop of established fighters (built up on sky) retire. Most of them are at the very end now, AJ,Wood,Warrington,Taylor all 1 or 2 fights left from the end. Do they have anyone else that general sports fans know? As I say, it's great for the hard-core boxing fans who have an intrest in all fights fights/fighters as it means that mass ticket giveaways will continue to be the norm going forward. @DramaShow , will you be going to this one? I know you usually score the cards, give good summary of the events, will you be in the stands with a free seat for this one?
Could it be the lowest attended event ever at this arena? I occasionally watch the Sheffield Steelers (ice hockey) there. I went to a preseason game once which was dead but even that had a better attendance than this.......never thought pre season ice hockey would outsell prime time Saturday night boxing!
With the tickets given to the undercard and freebies they might touch 3000. Think the arena holds 12k and the other Smith fight there did about 4k.
So currently less than 15% full! Imagine the echo when Diamante calls the fighters names.......introducing, Dalton Smith......Smith.......Smith......Smith
I said this the other day on another thread. Matchroom need to swallow their pride and recognise the big arena’s are not working in todays market, unless it’s involving big names/fights. Dalton Smith’s last few fights bored everybody to tears, plus he’s not a very big name in the city anyway from what I can gather. This should have been held in the Pondes Forge - nothing wrong with a 2.5k banged out venue. Just make it look nice with the marketing /visuals that MR are very good at.
Wednesday fans know about him but the vast majority are just waiting for him to fight at Hillsborough. 99% of Blades fans won’t attend because of his allegiance to Wednesday. Nothing wrong with the Forge - plenty of Clinton Woods fights there back in the day.
Very good points. The profile without Sky is very low hence some leaving Matchroom. When 3 cards were on the same night recently, I found myself watching the Conlan card while flicking over to the Sky card. The Wood v Lara 2 card was of no interest until the Wood v Lara fight which was a complete stinker. Already thinking that there is more than enough boxing on Sky Sports and BT Sports while feeling that I would not be missing much at all if I unsubscribed to DAZN UK.
Totally agree, I don't get the snobbery against the smaller venues. If packed out it would be a far better atmosphere than an empty arena. As you say, it doesn’t help that he hasn't been in entertaining fights. They can try to get the allegiance with Sheffield Wednesday to help but ultimately people want to be entertained. He's been about as fun as Okolie recently
I unsubscribed after the Benn fiasco. More than enough boxing on Sky, BT and C5. Top Rank are shown on Sky and the big PBC cards get picked up.
I’ve always thought it was a risk when boxers from cities with 2 football teams make it really obvious who their team is. Risk wiping out half your potential fanbase. Brendan Ingle used to tell his fighters to keep zipped on the subject.
I didn't know that but it was excellent advice. Hes been gone a few years ago and hasn't Kell Brook come out as a Blades fan since? Sometimes I think some of these fighters claim to be fans when they aren't dunno. But to the main discussion. Smith is a good all round fighter and comes across as a smashing lad. I hope he achieves massive things but to be perfectly honest I just dont see it. Think hell just fall short. European champion standard I reckon, Hess not old at 26 but in possibly a dozen fights there's no big names. Hope im wrong but if its a big name at this massive Hillsbrough day I could see him having his Brook/Spence moment. I think Maxwell goes the distance.
Changing my prediction, thought Dalton would win easy on points but I actually think he could blow Maxwell out of there early......crowd will pump him up.
just caught up with the fight it was sum bloody ko from dalton ko of the year contender fantastic
