Dalton’s main problem is everyone hates Sheffield Wednesday round here unless you support them. By pledging allegiance to them he’s wiped half his fanbase out. When it came to Kell Brook, people don’t mind Sheffield United (apart from Wednesday) so most of South Yorkshire turned out for him.

 

I don't know about that, a lot of people all over the country don't like Sheffield United and I don't get that feeling about Wednesday.

 

Them people won’t be travelling to watch Dalton though.

Rotherham and Barnsley hate Wednesday. Donny and Chesterfield aren’t too keen either. Whereas I doubt all 4 hold any dislike for the Blades. I know they’re not the 4 biggest clubs but with football and boxing’s fanbases been quite entwined at times there’s tens of thousands there who probably don’t want to go and support a Wednesday fan.

 

When you think about it, that's insane, isn't it? When football fandom comes into boxing it's often quite messy, I remember Sammy McNess having a load of West Ham fans at his fights and it all kicked off when he first lost. I don't think I'd be able to change my opinion on a boxer based on who they support.

 

If Matchroom had faith in Dalton Smith, they would have offered a much higher amount to arrange the fight.

I fear Smith will get a terrible beating - so comprehensive he risks not being the same fighter again.

Yes it’s pathetic IMO, Ricky Burns is a big Celtic fan, didn’t stop me supporting him. I’m always sceptical when boxers align themselves to a club and make it into their personality to sell tickets.

Feel for Dalton a bit, less than 1k will watch this fight, it’s bad enough being on at 4am UK time anyway but there’s not a single channel that people will watch that will advertise that he’s fighting

 

Don’t know mate. Matchroom bid about $1.7m, and even if they’d taken it back to Sheffield or stuck it in the Co-op in Manchester, it was still going to be a struggle to even break even.

The bids were crazy when you consider Matías was reportedly making around $300k in his previous reign. That jump only makes sense if Fresh were expecting outside money or a bigger backstop to appear later.

Instead it hasn’t, and Eddie’s basically let them sink with it rather than chase a fight that made no commercial sense, beyond Saudi money.

Hope Dalton pulls off the upset because pretty much everything’s been against him since this was announced.

That said Matías is a relentless beast – but he can be outboxed, big ask, but not impossible.

 

NY state commission have now rejected Matias’s gloves.

 

Hopefully this is the start of things turning for Smith. Gloves were probably manufactured by Cemex, the ready-mix types.

I’m rooting for Dalton tonight, but my money’s on Matías – 4/6 just looks the better value.

 

Yeah I hope Dalton wins but I just can’t see past Matias. Think Smith has been very carefully managed to this position and will be somewhat underprepared.

 

I feel as though Matias only lost to Paro because he completely underestimated him, was underprepared, and came in thinking it'd be an easy night's work in front of his home crowd. It took him about 20 minutes to get to the ring with all the dancing and celebrating; he got humbled, frustrated, and pot-shotted. A classic humbling. The build-up to this seems very different.

I do think Matias is crude and one-dimensional, but his pressure fighting and power are elite. Judging by the build-up to this, Matias has been rattled by Hearn and looks extremely set on getting a decisive win. Without sounding too harsh, I don't think Dalton is good enough, and he's not world-level. I think he would lose pretty easily to Puello, Hitchins, and Keyshawn. I don't think he has fought anyone close to this calibre in their prime, and he's also going overseas to do it. I see him starting off well, but getting broken down and stopped quite brutally in the second half of the fight, too big a leap.
