First: Rocky's last fight was in 1955 and then took time to announce his retirement the following year. So Floyd couldn't' have fought him in 1956 given Rocky retired.

You guys do realize that Floyd won the Middleweight Gold Medal; not the Heavyweight Gold Medal.

Talk about trying to push the kid to fast.

He had just turned 21 years old in 1956 when he entered the HW division and then won the title in late 1956. That's 4 years after turning Pro. That's quick. Wouldn't you say? How many 21 year olds' in history have there been?

The point may have simply been down to them believing Patterson was maturing fast enough and would be ready in time to face a soon to be 33 year old Marciano in late 1956. Even in 1957, Marciano would be 33/34 depending on when.
That's when they wanted the fight. But take the title from Marciano which would skyrocket Patterson's popularity and bank account.

So let's review what was said in the article:

So not only does Florio believe his Man will win, but in a way, he seems to be taking a shot at Rocky's opposition and their age {conditioning}.
So maybe if some of those guys were not past their prime, were younger, like Ali said...is it a tougher, maybe different fight with guys like Charles, Walcott, Moore and of course, Joe Louis.

So basically, they would take advantage of "timing" in what may have been a declining Champion...just like Marciano took advantage of "timing" when he fought Louis, Walcott, Charles and Moore.

Would it have been better if Floyd got that fight with Rocky in 1955 when he was 20 years old and still putting on weight and maturing ? He was still trying to build towards longer fights.
They were shooting for a time and building him up

He needed time to mature. He was already making a move as a HW in early '56 right before Marciano suddenly announced his retirement. It's not like Marciano never heard of him either. He mentioned Floyd as one of the guys that could come along and grab the title.

D'Amato was aiming at a late 56 matchup. That's when he fought Archie Moore for the vacant title.
Who knew in the public that a 32 year old, undefeated Champion, one fight shy of 50 wins...would suddenly retire ?

The big money fight was with Marciano. I'll have to make sure, but if I remember, D'amato didn't really let up on the hope that Marciano would make the fight (even though he had just retired). The Money in that fight was stimulating. That's why there was a push in the first place to get a MW to the HW division.

Champions, Fighters in general...tend to continue on into their 30's until they are gone as fighters. It's rare for fighters to retire without severe decline and/or injury.

But yes, it was smart to retire. I think more fighters should retire in their early 30's.
But remember the next possible debate we have when we discuss that it was good for Rocky to retire at 32 when discussing who he fought that put him in the HOF.

Also remember that when Patterson lost his title that Marciano thought about coming back but when Patterson won the title back, he called it a day.
Why? According to Duva...he didn't want to face Patterson because of his speed.
So although it could have been down to Marciano's age at that point...I do wonder if he saw this as a threat as a future fight.

Marciano vs. Patterson at any point late 1956 on is a big money fight.

    Rocky seemed impress

Caelum, I think your mind is made up so that's fair enough. But I, for one don;t think Marciano retired in order not to fight Floyd, nor do I think that The Rock waited for Floyd to lose his title before thinking comeback.

FWIW, I believe that The Rock would always be just a second away from sparking Patterson, anytime up to his mid 30s, possibly beyond.

We'll just have to agree to disagree.:good

Rocky thought he could beat Ingo. It takes more than a month to get a fight going, even back than, Rocky train for a month. During that month, There was already a rematch clause should Patterson lose(As was often the case) So Marciano was not going to get the first shot at Ingo even if Marciano went along with it.

By the time Ingo was flatten by Patterson in the rematch, Marciano had all ready decided to call it a day in regards to trying to come back. I think Marciano may have come back even vs Patterson, if the money was right, and he was in the shape he wanted to be. He knows his body and what it takes. The key word is the shape he wanted to be.

Nope. I didn't make up my mind. I Only considered it a possibility and wondered what each side was thinking of.

For Marciano, he could have seen the fight down the line as a possibility but didn't care because of the factors in his life at that point were just telling him to call it a day. Now maybe Floyd coming up wasn't something he favored or maybe it didn't bother him at all. He noticed him but it was nothing to be worried about at that point in time.

However, like a lot of athletes, he got that itch after being out. And when he saw Patterson lose, and the big money fight was there to have, he may have thought...why not. Unlike Patterson who is fast, Ingo isn't. I could take him even at this stage of my career. Which is important: at that stage of his career. Speed can be a real problem for an aging fighter. Especially a fighter who has all around speed: Legs, Upper-Body movement, Fast hands...and with Power in both hands. So the more time that passed, it favors Patterson. Marciano didn't just spark everyone out. It still took him time to batter opponents down. But yes, a clean shot delivered by Marciano can turn a fight around if not end it.

But I don't know. I just thought it all interesting. One Man was coming up and the other Man may have been on the slide.

    Even at that point ?

    Duva didn't think so.

It's much harder when you are older to face a Fast, Sharp, Combination puncher with power and agility...who is also younger and fresher...and arguably hungrier.

    How quick was Floyd ?

I haven't read through this thread but this seems to be a non-story.

I can't imagine Patterson's manager and trainer discussing him with a magazine writer and not saying that they thought he could beat Marciano, regardless of their private opinions.

Floyd's speed would be negated by Marcianos far superior strength and power combined with floyd's average chin.

We never know for sure, but Rocky gave up on plans for the fight before Ingo Patterson II started. He train for a month in 1959, and perhaps thought even against some one like Ingo, He may not have the shot he did like he did in his prime. I just think had the training thing work out, and he still had it, perhaps he might have sign for a fight vs Patterson after Ingo II. The training was the key here to come back or not, and he seem to fail at it for his standards.

patterson beating marciano depended on marciano declining past a point that he did and patterson improving past a point that he did.

Marciano retired because once he had beat moore there was nobody rated worth fighting. baker and valdes looked bad in an eliminator and both were beat by moore. jackson had already been found out by valdes. Satterfeild then beat valdes but had already lost to charles, there was nothing left that the fans could bet on against rocky. There was no logical chalenger by april 1956 worthy of an outdoor fight.

Marciano waited until the april, the last month he could start training before he could fit in two fights before the end of the outdoor season. Six months was as long as he wanted to stay out of training.

Patterson was a light heavyweight right up until marciano anounced his retirement.

very true, I was good friends with a relative of Floyds who was close to the game, they knew Marciano was the wrong fight for Floyd and they were keeping Floyd far from the heavyweight division as long as Marciano was there and a few years later Cus did not want Liston either despite the talk. Funny but they all felt a healthy Floyd had the style to beat Ali

I think it was a good division it was just that what was left was capable established guys who had all found their level and untested fresh guys who were each about 4 big fights away from proving to be something.
Young machen, young johansson, folley were unrated kids in 1955-56. Pastrano and Jackson did have a rating but needed more to build on. Patterson was in another division.

with marciano out of the way cus reckoned his kid had more potential than the untested heavyweight kids coming through, I know floyd was already Moores light heavyweight #1 contender so cus must have felt he may as well beat the same guy for the other belt. however, it has never been explained how he leap frogged a lot of body’s at HW to make a fight with the rated jackson. There was a line of contenders who had fought their way into the top ten that were stepped over.

Patterson was indeed a real talent but it was a real stroke to enable a lightheavyweight to beat the lightheavyweight champion for the heavyweight title without making his bones against more than one real heavyweight contender. He did not get to meet the dominant heavyweight to get there.

Patterson was a light heavyweight who won the heavyweight title. It was some fete but I dont think it should detract from how much of a talent floyd was.

Like the Rock brutally KO'd virtually all his opponents?
    I love Marciano.
A young Floyd may not have beaten Rocky but Marciano is not going to brutally KO Floyd (no one did)
Ingo? I often wonder how the first fight might have played out had Ingo tagged him with about 30 or so seconds left in the third.
Sonny? At least he wasn't belly up out like Lennox's two KO's; he was at least trying to rise and, as the old janitor I used to work with said: "Floyd's problem was that he tried to fight the 'people's fight' against Sonny."
And (this is another thread) IMO a prime Sonny is too much for the Rock.
Marciano wasn't physically huge enough to move Patterson around the ring.
I'll stop, I've heard all of this argument before but IMO if anyone says the Rock wades into Patterson fairly quickly and 'brutally' stops him I'm simply not buying that three day old fish as they said in the 50's. :D

And Rocky would have been foolish to attempt an Ingo scrap in the late 50's.
