When you rank the best Mexican fighters of all-time, Oscar Delahoya never even gets a mention and that's because he was born and raised in the United States.
There is truth to what Erik Morales alluded to, its really about being raised in Mexico that makes the difference.
Hunger!!! In the US even if you're poor most don't suffer from hunger.
In Mexico, if you don't work you don't eat, and that makes a huge difference in the mentality of the Mexican fighter born and raised.

 

Can't get over how different Morales looks now that he is no longer fighting, has put on a lot of weight.

I've brought up the point before that the decline of quality American boxers is partly because of social programs. Politics aside, a generous safety net decreases the hunger of a fighter. Literally and figuratively.

 

Morales doesnt seem like a health and fitness enthusiast. His training was for function only. To be the best boxer he could be. Now that hes retired he sees no utility in physical training or diet.

 

I saw a video where De La Hoya said even members of his own family were upset with him for beating Chavez. I think he said some of his Uncles are still not speaking to him.
