Box Rec already has this fight scheduled but sometimes they jump the gun. In any case this is a huge step up from this kid. Gomez is no Cotto or PBF but he is a legit top 20 welterweight, this is a big risk for a kid with no ameteur background. If this fight comes off it will be a pretty good one but I would say Gomez by decision right now.

Exactly. Gomez is a big step up from the Tijuana taxi driver-level opposition Chavez has been fighting. If this fight is indeed made, I'd go with Gomez.

If you make a pick based on who has fought the better opposition, you would absolutely have to go with Gomez.

If you make a pick based on overall talent and ability, it's very close. Chavez Jr, to me at least, has a lot of room for improvements while Gomez (a good fighter) is as good as he's going to get.
I would call this a 50/50 fight. No pick just yet...

Jr needs to throw more punches and not be so patient for openings. He does have pretty good technique and hand speed. But he needs to work on his footwork and jab. But he was facing a ankward southpaw who fought like he was still in the amateur... so for a 21 year old kid with no amateur background he was still pretty effective.

Junior has to step up sometime, and Gomez would be a solid win, so why not let the kid get his nose bloodied a bit. I think it is a very good choice. If he looses, he lost to a decent fighter. If he wins, he beat a well known guy, and gains a bunch of credibility. The only thing that could go really wrong would be if Gomez just blew him out, and I don't really see that happening.

I'd tentatively pick Chavez to win this one.

As soon as Gomez fights someone who is top fifteen (not saying Chavez is), he is going to get his ass kicked something fierce. Welterweight is deep these days, and Gomez is overrated.

I'm giving JCC Jr a fair chance to beat Gomez. That's a 50/50 fight . . . but definitely not against Malignaggi.
