Just watching Vargas/Trinidad again and seeing some amazing things from Fernando that went away after this fight (to some degree or another): 1)Ring Generalship-Don't wanna sound like Harold Lederman but Vargas was a smart fighter who owned Tito for a number of rounds with his thinking and able to control the pace 2)Jab-He had a hell of a jab which he used to control the distance early and set up vicious 1-2s later in the fight 3)Composure-George Foreman called it in the commentary: Vargas, after one of the worst 1st rounds ever, pulled it back and took over in the middle rounds 4)Power-Serious power in each punch, which he has a huge variety of I'm more convinced now than ever that Vargas had a SERIOUS shot of beating Trinidad. If not for Tito DRILLING him in the dick in the 4th, I'd have even money on it. ****, if I had to choose I'd say Vargas TKO in the late rounds the way it was going. Trinidad's best punches that night were well below the beltline. Not to say Tito didn't fight a great fight but those low blows took a massive toll later in the night.
Very true. So many can't accept that Vargas could have beat the beloved Trinidad if it wasn't for those low blows. Three hard as hell intentional low blows Nady still lets the fight continue. That is a very unfair disadvantage if I ever saw one.
i think he should be in the HOF one day...always was in good fights and was one of the youngest junior middleweight champs ever. he just peaked too quick...maybe he too the step up too quick idk but he should def be in the HOF one day imo
It must be Vargas birthday or something with these threads about what if he would have....He was a good fighter. HOF? If they want to put him in there for being the youngest to ever win the title at 154. Oscar and Mosley did not hit him in the balls and to lose to Mayorga is tough to swallow. It was not a good way to end a career with a loss to the likes of Mayorga. By the way, I am not condoning the illegal punches from Tito by no means. A foul is a foul and five minutes is not enough to recuperate. Oh, and the fact that Vargas used steriods to have an advantage to beat Oscar is a greater foul. Oscar still beat him.
He sure was fun to watch when he was coming up. He really was ferocious.... my favorite fight was when he beat Quartey. Lost a lot of respect for him after the steroid thing and actually gained a lot of respect for Oscar as a fighter that night.
totally agree. The fighter Vargas was before Trinidad is vastly different than the fighter after. But he really grew up with the whole steroid debacle. he owned up and took his punishment like a man. Someone else said that he peaked too soon which is very true. He had a boatload of talent and they pushed him accordingly but c'mon, who would put a kid in there with a beast like Tito. he had the talent to win but he lacked experience in seasoning at the pro level.
AT the time of the fight The Low Blows were a very big deal but History will always remember Trinidads KO and the only people who will remember the low blows are Vargas fans and family. I personally feel Vargas was a top 5 p4pder at a time when you had Trinidad, JOnes, Mab, Em, DLH all in their prime. Vargas was a total package whos Pride never got swallowed. I think If Oscar would have continued to Box vs Trinidad in their bout, Vargas wouldn't have slugged it out with Trinidad. HE would have beaten Trinidad more convincingly than DLH too like he did Quartey. The only reason He stood and sluged was because DLH ran and he felt He couldn't let his people down
