IT was pretty up there. People thought he was going to run thru Winky but instead won a very competive close fight in the championship rounds.

So Vargas wasn't that good because he was very lucky to get the decision and Winky wasn't in his prime yet.

Vargas' famous quote before the Tito fight was "This Mexican doesn't quit".

Tito's long range hooks got Vargas down early, and then the huevos shots saved Tito when Trinidad was heading for dreamland.

Tito ruined several young and potentially great fighters, including Vagas.

Vargas "was" good in his prime.

Do you realize how young Vargas was when he turned pro?

I thought the quote after the Quartey fight was "this mexican fights and doesn't run" obviously reffering to ODLH

Yep, Vargas was tremendous. Before his 14th pro fight Larry Merchant said "..if you bought stock in Vargas, it would seem almost like getting in on the ground floor of Microsoft, he can become that good."

Good, but got humiliated and dismantled by Oscar De La Hoya and was being too cocky compared to what he accomplished. Tito also gave him a wake up call. So actually, not THAT good.

Nah, Vargas wasn't just good, he was exceptional. His promoters and management wasn't that good. They pushed him along far too quickly. Trinidad battered his brain and permanently damaged Vargas' balance, and De La Hoya was able to capitalize on the vulnerability that was left over. Vargas, BTW, demonstrated very clearly he might have beaten both Vargas and Trinidad in those fights themselves with different twists of fate, or possibly later in his career with better timing.

Nah, I think the only person to blame for his downfall was himself. No one told him to take roids, challenge the best that early, and be that cocky when he clearly couldn't back it up. All the "coulda" "shoulda's" don't stand up to what really happened: Started out ok, became "ferocious", got a little too full of himself, and got served. And how did he accept those defeats? He was a total loser about it. :!:

To be honest, I think that the last thing boxing needs right now is trash talking drug cheats like Vargas.

vargas is a example of why you shouldn't rush a fighter so fast despite him being very talented, I mean look at the facts:

he fought campus his 15th fight
he fought marquez his 17th fight
he fought winky his 18th fight
he fought quartey his 19th fight
he fought tito his 21st fight

Two of those fighers mentioned will move on to become HOFers (tito and wright). I mean this is just insane not only that but to win all of them except the tito fight and then give tito your all is special. Vargas probably would have been a ATG had he not been rushed, but that question will never be answered.
