I can remember watching Vargas-Trinidad & it was a great fight. No matter what happened from that point onwards in Vargas' career, no one could deny that he gave his all in trying to beat Trinidad. We must not forget that Vargas was champ at age 21 - that's very young. I feel Vargas went through a steep learning curve on his way up - perhaps too steep! Hindsight is a wonderful thing, & looking back, I do think the fight with Trinidad came too soon for Vargas. I do believe the loss to Trinidad play a part of Vargas from then on. I mean, don't get me wrong, Fernando gave a brilliant account of himself, but he took some lumps & then some from Trinidad. One thing I'll never forget about Trinidad-Vargas is, after Fernando had lost, he was in his own corner, head down, looking dejected, which you can understand. Mike Tyson jumped up & showed encounragement to Fernando, telling to keep his head high, basically trying to lift his spirits. Tyson showed class in trying to help a young fighter out right there. Vargas was a brilliant fighter. People might be quick to knock him, but fact is, Fernando is not an idiot. He's a millionaire, does not need to box again, can live a comfortable life, etc. He's only, what 31? He's made his mark in boxing, made a lot of money, invested it wisely & can you enjoy the fruits of his labour.
Fernando Vargas was a great fighter but was always jealous of Oscar De La Hoya, Like The Golden Boy, Vargas was a Mexican American like Oscar and called Oscar out for years taunting him and telling him he was more Mexican than Oscar. De La Hoya never gave Vargas the chance earlier in his Career because De La Hoya said he didn't deserve it he had no respect. I was glad Oscar Knocked Vargas out that night, by god what a left hook. " I had different reasons for disliking him. His claim he was more Mexican than I because, in his mind, he was more macho, got to me. It ate at me inside, thought I didn't show it. I thought I had put all that behind me when I beat Julio Ceasar Chavez a second time. I had finally gotten the Mexican fans to accept and respect me, and now along comes Vargas with that same old crap. It made me want to destroy him, really hurt him. Vargas was the first opponent I had ever felt that way about. If his goal had been to fire me up enough to fight him, he succeeded". Oscar De La Hoya on Fernando Vargas After the the fight Titled 'BAD BLOOD' a blood test revealed that Fernando Vargas had taken Stanozolol, an anabolic steroid. For testing positive, he was suspended for nine months and fined $100,000 by the Nevada State Athletic Commission.
Really? I dont see the referees giving a fighter up to 5 min recovery time after they get hit in the face....
i have a lot of respect for vargas. he was the man you had to beat to fight the man... and he was a formidable opponent for anyone in his prime.
there's another side to that story.... who says anyone around welter hits as hard as oscar or tito did way back when..?
Vargas was a BEAST in the mid 90's, plain and simple as that. The one thing that stands out most to me was that he was economical with his punches- he didn't waste any of them, and the ones he threw were well....they were ferocious! Vargas was one of the first fighters I remember watching and he really got me into boxing when I was a teen first discovering the sport. Always in good fights. And always good to his fans...never heard a single bad thing sad about him from a fan, despite his bad boy persona. You show him love, he does the same.
vargas wasn't economical... he was stand up though and great value for money. but he was never economical with his punches...
I am not a big De Le Hoya fan but an all time classic pre-fight moment was when Vargas was posing and flexing his biceps and Oscar was tapping his own chin saying those roids don't make your chin stronger and I am going to tag you on your chin.....:yep
vargas was never the same AFTER the de la hoya fight, it was oscar who ruined him......not tito. vargas was roided up in peak shape for oscar, he hurt oscar more than anyone else did in oscars career up to that point...it was a very close fight and a war! oscar took him out late wore the juice head down. vargas was in his prime.
The fight should have been stopped in round 9. It was a shame that Nady let it go on until the 12th round. Thats what ruined Vargas. From 9th round and onwards it was a total Trinidad ass kicking.
