I found an old film that I couldn't identify of what I thought was Sugar Ray Robinson knocking out an unidentified opponent. I went through every SRR knockout I could find and couldn't match it. I was excited at the prospect of having discovered an unseen film of Robinsons. After much exhaustive research it turned out it wasn't SRR at all. It was Joe "Old Bones" Brown knocking out Joey Lopes, which is already out there anyway. Darn. I never realized how much Brown alike in style Brown was to Robinson and how much they looked alike when fighting, same style, build and even the crazy hair going everywhere. Ive never really paid close attention to Brown so now Im going to have to go back and start watching his stuff because he looked pretty awesome.
If anyone ever writes an article on Joe Brown, please title it old bones. An underrated guy, cute, could punch, tough and wiley. Add Johnny Bratton to the Robinson clone list, although obviously Brown and Robinson are a mile ahead. Did they all have the same barber?
I really like watching Joe Brown in action. A very skilled performer. I think he gets overlooked too often when talk of the great lightweights takes place. But, then, I suppose there are A LOT of great lightweights.
I thought you didn't think much of him. I'm sure I remember you saying he wasn't that great:huh It surprised me at the time because I think he looks excellent on film, fine jab, good movement ,and a fair variety of punches. His dips in form almost all coincided with his loss of the title, and when he should have been sitting back watching fights rather than being in them.
Boy, I don't recall saying that. If I did I was off base. I cant really think of anything Ive seen of his that made me think poorly of him. I don't remember what all Ive seen. Ive got most of his stuff but I haven't really watched it. I think Ive always respected him but was never really well schooled on him. He kind of slipped under my radar. I couldn't believe how much he looked like Robinson in that fight all the way down to the wicked body punch flurry and then switch to the head that Robinson used to do. I was looking over his record and the guy fought for TWENTY-NINE years!!! Good lord.
In that special list of how great you are matched against how little you're mentioned, Joe Brown is pretty near the top. A superb lightweight. I see Robinson and even some Benny Leonard in his footwork. High praise indeed.
In all, Brown made eleven successful defences of his title – a record until Roberto DurĂ¡n's arrival in the division – and remained Champion for almost six years. Took someone as good as Carlos Ortiz to take his title.
I may have but I don't remember or know why. I might have meant that I found him uncompelling because there has to be some reason why I never really got into the guy. Im going to have to go back and watch some of his stuff. Who knows, I may come back and say "hes not for me" but in that one clip he sure looked like Robinson's twin.
I love Browns style, very wily guy He does look and fight quite like Robinson, I remember Joe Rein saying Robinson & Brown were the guys that showed him the shoulder roll at Stillmans The Lopes knockdowns were very nice, his right was so accurate
You're not a true boxing fan unless your change your mind about something every day. There are days where I think Liston was the best HW ever. The next day I'll think Dempsey would KO him in 2. This Joe Brown guy sounds interesting. Any specific footage you guys recommend for viewing?
I always remember thinking he was a terrific fighter in film and had great control of range. I also thought he had amazing footwork and an excellent jab. However he's in such a deep division it's easy to overlook him.
Britain definitely fought similarly to Robinson. Gavilan is not very far off too. Except his punching was more unique with those uppercuts.
