Dan Rafael: GGG and Canelo have agreed to fight at 160, but not Until Fall 2017.

That's what I thought too. What happened to the Liam Smith fight? That was a real marquee matchup.

 

Canelo last two fights were on PPV with Cotto and Khan. Khan did 8 million live gate and 500k PPV. The Cotto fight did 900k PPV. Canelo is in a different league from GGG, the other middleweights or jmws. Im sure his fanbase has taken a hit but there's still plenty of casuals that will watch his fights because he's mexican and good looking. Canelo can fight Golovkin in SEPT 2017 and still get paid very well while stalling GGG enough to see him slow down more. Canelo can tell andrade, Charlo, Lara, Lemiuex to F off. Eventually he will need a real opponent but he can fleece the casual public for some time

 

Few mixed thoughts or questions come to my mind on this, like...
-In a way, GGG could use this delay to go after BJS to get the WBO belt

-What's to stop Golden Boy promotions from saying Sept 2018 come Sept 2017

-From here now to Sept 2017, what middleweights would Canelo actually consider fighting til Sept 2017? or does he even fight any middleweights?

-In my mind, Golden Boy promotions would look to Canelo to get an easy belt from Liam Smith. From a business POV, Oscar can't have his top dog fighter boxing without a belt. it looks bad for Golden Boy if they're promoting Canelo as this superstar if he doesn't have a belt strapped around him.

-What does this delay do for Canelo's fanbase?

 

And watch his PPV numbers sink....

He better hope nobody decent gets brave enough to fight GGG or he just might find himself looking like a B-side next fall.

 

People talk about the fight as if the world will come to an end straight after the winner is announced. Why couldn't they have a rematch, or heaven forbid a trilogy?

Canelo is levels above anyone GGG has fought. Just watching GGG vs Lemieux and Murray makes me think Canelo is perfectly capable of going the distance with him. What would be the big shame in losing anyway?

How much do you honestly see GGG slowing down in a year? I haven't seen any signs of decline. He looks the same to me, if not more dangerous. I thought Lemieux was his best performance thus far and that was not even a year ago.

I don't expect to see any change unless he gets into a fight with a Pacquiao/Margarito level of punishment.
