He didn't say the fight will be cancelled just that it's in serious jeopardy. That remains to be seen, and we won't know what kind of jeopardy it is in until the hearing April 10th. According to WADA, in clenbuterol cases in areas where meat contamination is known to be a problem, the burden of proof is not on the athlete, however that's WADA's guidelines, NSAC and Bob Bennett may not apply WADA's official stance to this situation. We will see.

That is a bit telling if the fight wasn't even mentioned once on the Sat card , or not listed on the upcoming events for HBO.

Are you sure about the burden of proof? I just read that they still consider it liability on the athlete after the Olympic warning.

Under the World Anti-Doping Code, Clenbuterol is a non-threshold non-specified substance, meaning that any amount of clenbuterol detected in an athlete urine sample is reported as a positive test. Therefore, it is important to note that strict liability dictates an athlete has ultimate responsibility for what is in his/her system, regardless of its origin.

Effectively, when the circumstances of a positive case indicate that the athlete has been in one of the identified countries where clenbuterol meat contamination is significant, the anti-doping community views it as unreasonable to put the burden of proof on the athlete, i.e. to prove that the meat, which he or she had consumed, was contaminated.

I still remember when Pac asked for that two week window to know when the testers were coming And didn't want to be tested a month before the fight, lmao. To this day PAc's fans still expect us to believe that Pac was clean.

Come to find out...Canelo did fail two tests, 3 days apart. So in essence you can say that he failed one test. All of me sides with GG canceling the fight, but a part of me says that GG now knows that Canelo can fight and that he's not that same young kid that he bullied in sparring years ago. Whatever happens im good. I just hope that Bud Crawford isn't on the juice lol.

Interesting read..thanks. I did find this bullet point lower in the article:

    • All of the values were below 1ng/ml and therefore in the range of potential meat contamination cases.
    What was Canelo's ng/ml?

This should still be absolutely investigated to the fullest. My bet is 50/50 for now on Canelo receiving some sort of extended suspension past April so the fight will be cancelled.

You're welcome, it was an interesting read for sure and really helped me understand how these cases are being handled. Canelo's ng/ml was 0.6-0.8 ng/ml for the first test and 0.06-0.08 ng/ml for the second test 3 days later. Both were well within the range for meat contamination. But yes it should be investigated to the fullest and I think it is being investigated.

I have my doubts as to whether the NSAC can prove that the postive test was a result of a pharmacological intake of clenbuterol. It states very clearly that:
    • Despite continuously improving analytical methods for testing, it still remains impossible, without taking into account other factors, to determine whether a positive sample stems from pharmacological intake of clenbuterol or unintentional ingestion through contaminated meat.
To what extent the NSAC would ask Canelo and his team to prove where his meat came from is unclear, however I'd imagine if they were to do that they'd ask for that information prior to April 10th. Many on here had argued that it was Canelo's resposibility to prove where his meat came from to prove it was contaminated, but that's not what the WADA statement indicates for athletes who live in countries known to meat contamination.

I would expect Canelo to be cleared due to the well known problem of meat contamination in Mexico, with the hearing establishing what caused the positive test officially. The hearing is a required step for any positive drug test, if he is given a longer suspension and the fight is cancelled, I'd be very interested to hear their reasoning.

Here's another case that hasn't been talked about around here, the Luis Nery situation last year.

    http://www.espn.com/boxing/story/_/...inding-was-possibly-result-food-contamination

Nery tested positive for the banned substance zilpaterol last year but the WBC ruled be wouldn't be stripped of his belt because the WBC said it believes that the positive finding was the result of food contamination.

After investigating the matter, the WBC issued its ruling on Monday in which it said that it "cannot make a determination with sufficient certainty as to whether Mr. Nery's adverse finding was the result of intentional ingestion of a banned substance to improve performance. All information and facts lead to conclude that the adverse finding was due to consumption of contaminated food products."

Zilpaterol, similar to the banned substance clenbuterol, has contaminated beef in Mexico and has been an issue for athletes there in terms of drug testing.

Further, the WBC said it will investigate the effect of contaminated beef products in test results and will make a formal request to the World Anti-Doping Association and VADA to establish specific measures and protocols to address clenbuterol and zilpaterol.

Since the Nery situation was only a few months ago, it's unclear if the WBC has made any format request to establish specific measures and protocols to address clenbuterol and zilpaterol. If Nery was cleared after testing positive much closer to his fight with Yamanaka (he tested positive in a sample from July 27th, fight happened on August 15th), I don't see how there's any precedence to suspend Canelo for a sample 2 and a half months before his fight with Golovkin for a similar issue.

Given what happened with Nery, and the WADA statement about clenbuterol, I'd expect Canelo to be cleared, but you never know. This is a much more high profile event than Nery Yamanaka, and there's bound to be more focus put on April 10th and their decision.

Maybe it’s just because they don’t want to actively promote a fight with a suspended fighter.

No big deal if it’s cancelled. We get bjs vs ggg which is a more competitive fight anyway.
Canelo clearly isn’t ready for ggg anyway.
