But the only true winning fighter, or coach... is going to be decided by whoever actually wins the contract. All of those other fights don't even matter.
Hughes has been running his own school for what, a few months, has 3 guys, and the team already has 1 belt with Robbie and will soon have 2 with Hughes beating Serra. Before that he was in the corner for all or almost all of Sylvia, Pulver, and Franklin's championship fights. Has any Serra product ever even been in attendence at a championship fight?
6-2 speaks for itself. What jokes can there be? What you are talking about is Militech camp and its not Matt Hughes, it's its own thing. Also, cornering doesn't mean ****. From what I've seen so far Serra connects with his fighters much better and that is probably one of the biggest assets for any coach.
Cornering absolutely means something, why else would some people be more sought out than others? As for the MFS thing, no he didn't run the gym, but he was integral in developing Sylvia and especially Lawler who he was grooming as the next MFS welterweight from the start. Pulver and Hughes also had a good connection, and Franklin would often leave his home camp, mainly to train with Hughes and have Hughes in his corner. Now Hughes has his own gym, the HIT squad on the Illinois side of St Louis, and has ICON and EliteXC MW champ Robbie Lawler with him, a rediculously talented wreslter whos undefeated in Jacob Hey. So you've got Hughes who was instrumental in Robbies championship, almost as influential in 3 others, has as many championship wins as Serra has total wins; and then you have Serra who's best product is....Pete Sell? Luke Cummo? Or how about at Renzo's, when he was there the only champion quality fighters were Renzo himself and Almedia, who had seniority on Serra anyway. If you want to be a good gi BJJ player, go to Serra, if you want to be an MMA champion, go to Hughes, champions sourround themselves with Hughes and his guys for a reason. So yea, Serra has 4 more wins on a show with a limited amount of time to train inexperienced fighters. Meanwhile in the real world, it took exactly 1 fight for a HIT squad guy to win a title under Hughes, something no Serra fighter has ever done.
The names u've mentioned TRAIN with Hughes, but he's not a coach. Serra has much more extensive record in training even if it is concentrated in BJJ. No doubt, Hughes has many great things to teach in MMA. All the experience just from being one of the most dominant fighters EVER. But those things don't make you a good coach. Serra is a better COACH(thats he's job when's he's not fighting(used to be i guess)) and has more knowledge in BJJ. Matt Hughes has much more knownledge in MMA and he is a full time fighter. He's just not a coach As for cornering, it takes analysis of your fighter and the opponent. Coaching is training a fighter under you, so he progresses in levels of skill, knowledge etc.
He IS A COACH, he has his own gym now, its in Granite City Illinois, its not MFS, its the H.I.T. squat, or Hughes Intensive Training, how much more clearly can I explain this? It took the HIT squad, Hughes gym, which he runs and is the coach, 1 fight to have a student bring back a belt, Serra has still never had a student do that. While Robbie was already a champ in one org, he unified under Hughes, and he spent most of his young career being developed by Hughes. Also, when he was at MFS, he directly coached alot of guy, Wanderlei Silva and Pele were not head coaches at Chute Boxe, but Pele directly trained the Rua brothers when he was there and Silva directly trained Cyborg among others, without them those fighters wouldn't have been what they were, same goes for Hughes when it comes to Sylvia, Pulver, Franklin, and more than anybody Robbie. Not to mention all the wrestlers he helped coach at EIU.
Well first of all his own gym, is the one he JUST got? Meaning he actually got it AFTER the show which was filmed during summer. I wanna see some concrete evidence that he COACHED them and not TRAINED WITH them while giving them pointers etc. Hughes still has all the coaches that train him AND those fighters i.e. boxing/bjj/cardio etc. I wanna see where he was a COACH and not a fighter. Coaches is not just knowledge and experience its also the ability to get the point across from A(trainer) to B(trainee). From what I've seen in the show and from what I've heard from 2nd hand account Serra did the job great.
Lawler was fully associated with HIT before his fight with Ninja, Hughes was his coach, it was all explained on the preview of the fight, what more proof do you want? Also, why would he follow Hughes if Hughes wasn't the guy he had the most trust in? He wasn't just a "ringer" brought in before his title fight, he was a Hughes guy from the jump. Serra is doing great on TUF, yay. Hughes' has a current champ on his team, a room full of belts, and 3 fighters who he all worked extensively with on their titles before forming his new team.
You're missing my point Beebs. I'm not questioning Hughes knowledge or Lawlers ability. The fact that Lawler followed Hughes from Militech doesn't make Hughes a good coach. It could mean MANY things, financial, friends, location etc. In Militech both Lawler and Hughes were still coached by experts in different areas of expertise. Lawler is at the point where Hughes can help him in advanced level preparation. Thats where Hughes has VAST amount of experience. But when he is given "newbies" he falters? I know only as much as i saw on the screen from Hughes team. I saw coaching from Serra and I saw coaching from Hughes' assistants and Hughes running his fighters like dogs, giving them bible, and wrestling around with them. Very limited but that's what I saw. The statistics tell us that the proportion of what is shown and what is filmed must be somewhat preserved. Yes, Serra is doing great on TUF, and it is clearly visible that he handles himself well as a COACH. What does Hughes having a room full of belts and a MW champ has to do with his ability in coaching? I'm getting a wibe that you have this mentality "if you're a great fighter you're a great coach."
Their both good coaches, but having fighters accomplish big things is determining factor in who is the better high level MMA coach in my mind, Hughes already has 1, Serra never had any, never had anybody close. Lawler came out with perfect gameplans against Trigg and Lawler, became a much better wrestler, and had raised his cardio to 5 round level, guess who he trains with/under that would help the most with those 3 things? Hughes TUF team could lose every single fight on the show and he would still be the more accomplished MMA coach. Plus, its not like Hughes can't coach newbies, look at season 2.
I believe that not making Danzig fight Speer was Serra's first major mistake. He now risks having both advance, and his team losing two of its fighters. It makes no difference to me, because I really don't care which fighter wins the show. If it's Danzig, Speer, George, or the tall dude that smiles alot and can't wake himself up; it's all fine by me. One thing I've noticed is that time on this show does seem to really improve your skills. Danzig complained about no getting enough sparring, yet he looked much improved since his first showing.
