Dana should have let them fight under K1 rules. He knows the average boxing fan or person in general for that matter is stupid and if Sliva lost tons of idiots will down play MMA.
Silva should leave the UFC and fight Jones anyway. He would make more money from a boxing PPV than he ever would in the UFC making 75K a fight.
doesn't matter because Liddell is strictly a UFC fighter win or lose he will come back to UFC .. Dana had everything to gain and nothing to lose by letting Chuck fight in pride .. pride and ufc do not compete for the same fighters , and if chuck loses Dana does not lose control of the UFC and Chuck can still be the UFC champion and he is still controlled by dana, unlike boxing if a promoter's fighter loses his champion ship belt they loses his undefeated record he loses the power of negotiation.. Dana doesn't have this issue because he sit at all ends of the table , he's the negotiator for both fighter , the promoter and the sanctioning body and the owner of the UFC governing body he get paid no matter what. but if the two Pride and UFC compete under separate sanctioning body that governed the rules and negotiation, the lay out would look completely different in UFC and Pride .
Its a good business decision. Actually not doing it would be a horrible business decision. Thats all. Dana represents Zuffa first and foremost, you can't blame him for this. If I was in his position I would do all in my power to prevent it also.
Defend it? Are you kidding me? Dana White's called out boxers to fight in the octagon on multiple occasions prior to this to "prove" that UFC has superior fighters. In doing so, he left himself wide open to something exactly like this. Now that someone's played his own card against him, he plays the ***** move- instigating a fight, only to back out when he doesn't hold every advantage If he didn't want to look like an idiot, he could've kept his damn mouth shut and promoted his sport without taking every chance he could to rip on boxing. Spewing the bull**** he has is the sole reason that many MMA fanboys "hate" boxing, even though most have never taken the time to actually watch and learn about it. His mentality singlehandly created the (wrongful) illusion to new combat fans that you shouldn't be fans of both sports. His attitude, which infected impressionable MMA fans, in turn, made alot of boxing fans resentful as **** towards him, and subsequently, MMA. That is why there's more of a rift between the two fanbases than there should be. That's why I have a big problem with him. He could've been successful promoting the UFC without pulling that pro wrestling propaganda ****** ****.
It's too bad this will never happen. It could have been a historic match. It might even have been a really good fight. Irregardless, the promotion would have been something that caught the casual fan's interest.
Some very good points in this thread. These are the facts: -Roy Jones WILL NOT fight under any other rules besided boxing. -It would be a monster promotion! -Dana White is wise to protect his top fighter and not tarnish the lustre. -But Silva SHOULD leave the UFC now, fight Jones for $5 million (which is equal to what he'd make in 10 UFC matches) and either Dana would be forced to be involved in a co-promotion or battle it out in court afterward.
The same would go if Jones or any other boxer went to MMA. If they lost then the MMA fans would go nuts (like they have in the past) b/c a boxer lost in MMA. Point is MMA and Boxing are different. A MMA fighter can't walk in to a Boxing ring and exect to beat a boxer...just like a boxer cant enter the MMA ring and expect to beat the best MMA fighter. If a boxer and an MMA fighter trained for 6 mnths to a year then they could make an impact in either sport.
Isn't it REALLY all about money? 1)If Dana got a significant cut of a huge payday the Silva-Jones fight would be on. 2)Silva can make multi millions if he does it and I am sure his management knows that. Why aren't they demanding that this fight take place? Will the UFC match what Silva could make?
