What was the story behind Dacuta?

Had a bit of exposure in the 90's due to the "Peoples Choice" tourney... Feasted on some past prime 80's guys like Broad and Bonecrusher Smith.

There was a bit of interest in him at one time, I'm guessing because Rooney came on board and was teaching him the Tyson'esque head movement, despite him clearly being a C-Level fighter.

Anyone remember him? Why did he retire after 3 years of being a fighter?

106-2 as an amateur with 89 knockouts is his amateur record, to throw that out there.

Beating a 300lbs Broad does not make up for the fact that anyone with a pulse beat him.

That $1 Million exhibition thing could of made him, but he blew the Tubbs fight.

I saw him on TV a few times. Dancuta was a little on the short side. He had some skills, but just wasn't big, fast, or strong enough to make it to the next level. At his best he could have been a fringe contender type.

I remember that " People's choice " heavyweight tournament and it being advertised in ring magazine a few months before it happened. From what I remember it basically turned out to be a flop. The winner of the tournament was supposed to get a million bucks, but the spectator interest was so low that only three hundred grand could be awarded. If memory serves, I think it was either Tyrell Biggs or Tony Tubbs who won it.

I think Tubbs cleared about $30,000 that night. I read an article about it that Bunce wrote in BM a few years ago. Dancuta wasn't exactly blown away by Tubbs. If anything, Tubbs squeaked out one of the 3 rounds to win 2-1 from what I remember.

Tubbs jab was enough to win here. In theory the people's choice tournament was a great idea. Not all of the fights were stinkers, and the fighters were glad to be there despite the cut back in purses.

Why did Dancuta retire? Well, he knew he wasn't going to be anything more than a good journeyman, and probably found a regular job that he liked.

Yeah he was from the town I lived for a while Bacau.

Good fighter but he wasnever serios. That Jimmy Thunder display was terrible.
He was a bigger Sam Peter.

More ercently he has fallen to the mob life.Did some time in Germany and is still is currently I believe.Had some trouble with the law in Romania too.
