Johnny Garton vs. Chris Jenkins, 12 rounds @ welterweigth

 

This is for the British Boxing Board of Control's 147lb title, 1st defense of Garton. (putting him one away from claiming the coveted "Lonsdale outright" honors...)

 

Jenkins is trained by popular retired middleweight Gary "The Rocket" Lockett.

 

Round 1

Jenkins is working a strong left jab up from a crouch while moving to his left. Garton is shooting his own jab off the hip, a beat later than Jenkins. Garton struggling to find his range & timing. Jenkins starting to pierce the guard with a 1-2 leaping in from a crouch before resuming his spiraling cruise. Garton tentative so far.

Round 2

Jenkins is falling under the long telegraphed Garton jab and plopping a right hand into the side of his neck with a splash, landing none too cleanly but holding Garton in place and preventing him from bearing down on Jenkins as he moves around the ring with impunity. Some body shots lightly strewn in by Jenkins after pecking in close with the jab. Nice boxing from Jenkins, moving and scoring, not taking receipts. Garton tries countering a jab with his own but instead gets scraped on the chest with a counter-countering hook.

20-18 Jenkins

 

Seems that goal is going to elude him, unless something drastic changes in the complexion of this one. Title change looks imminent.

 

Barry Jones has it 20-18 Jenkins.

 

Round 3

Jenkins is jabbing into Garton's trachea, falling off to his right and looping right hands into his bicep or the side of his throat depending on whether the champion is rolling his shoulder up protectively in time. Garton starting to find a piece of Jenkins with the right hand, timing his movements and launching into his projected trajectory. Jenkins able to move & flurry just enough in the final minute to nick it.
