He's always just been a raw (but sometimes effective) banger, and now he's an aging & slowing raw banger. Which explains how the very average Tomonobu Shimizu got to call himself a world champion for a very short while.

 

Round 1

Cazares dances around Diaz and sticks out a few jabs, to no avail. He also sticks out his chin, which the long-limbed Nicaraguan takes advantage of by landing hooks and uppercuts from beyond Cazares' reach. Diaz is landing on the button but only turning Cazares' head without any buckle in his knees or the hint of forcing him to take a backward step. Cazares still has that chin.

Round 2

Cazares is jabbing and lobbing right hands into the guard of the taller man from several feet away. Diaz waves his gloves around and floats out a left jab whenever Cazares dares to step toward him. Very slow round. Diaz controlling range with his jab. Wild overhand right by Cazares, missing badly. Cazares ducks and rolls to his left under and away from a long reaching Diaz jab. Cazares is reduced to circling on the outside peering for vulnerable spots and then darting in with jabs to the body. Cazares manages to land an up-jab to the jaw after one of his darts in, but doesn't linger.

Round 3

Quick right hand by Cazares to start off, but no follow-up. Diaz gets on ths outside track. Diaz is picking Cazares off on the outside with his long straight jab and right hand. Cazares comes chopping in over the top, but can't lay a clean hand on him. OHH, BIG OVERHAND RIGHT by Cazares thrown over a Diaz 1-2. Cazares jumps on him and fires some line drive rights and then flips his arm to work uppercuts to the body. Left uppercuts as well. Diaz is getting backed up and trying to block with a high guard but Cazares is smashing it out of the way and chopping that tree down!!

Round 4

Cazares comes winging in with the overhand right. Nothing doing. Diaz is being careful, leaning back, circling away, popping jabs. It's back to slow and tentative, with Cazares unable to figure how to cut the ring off. Ultimately Diaz does it for him, lazily slowing his pace as he nears the ropes and letting Cazares get close to him and unleash a BIG overhand right. Diaz stunned!! Left hooks and more overhands strung together by Cazares!! Pause, and they check something in the neutral corner. Tape on Diaz's gloves? Whatever. Time in. More vicious attacks by Cazares, hooks and overhands.

Round 5

Diaz regains control of range and gets his jabs off. Cazares rushes in and forces his jab through the arms. Lefts to the body by Cazares when Diaz lifts his gloves higher to deal with those southpaw jabs. Cazares is showing controlled aggression, and isn't able to find that big punch with which to rock Diaz like he did in the 3rd and 4th but is firmly in control and not letting Diaz keep it at the range he desires.

Round 6

Cazares dives in with his right jab to the body. Diaz tries to drop his arm down on him as he comes in, and Cazares flies up in his face with a geyser of a stiff right jab that buzzes him, executing a little Trojan Horse strategy there. Cazares is able to hit Diaz to the body and get the arms to drop a bit, and then whacking away up top with big shots loaded up in midair as he comes leaping at his quarry. Diaz hurt a few times.

Round 7

Cazares comes in with a high overhead right hook. Low blow hurts Cazares, he takes a second to recover. More left hands to the face jumping in by Cazares, and those high ear-clapping right hooks. Cazares is slap-parrying the Diaz jab with his left hand now. Hummingbird wing right hooks by Cazares. Diaz is shy to throw. A few left jabs, that's it. Cazares is tipping his shoulders back and not getting too close to begin with, able to avoid the jab. All the power punches coming from Cazares, thrown with abrupt wildness that Diaz can't hope to predict.

Round 8

Cazares is pushing Diaz back with the right, throwing jabs and hooks in equal measure. Cazares drops his head down to either side on the way in, erratically, not letting Diaz get a bead on him with the jab. Cazares is visibly gassing, taking breathers on the outside after every submersible attack building up from body to head. Cazares is diving down, chopping at the body with his head dropped off to one side, and then spearing left hands up at Diaz's head with right hooks to head him off at the pass.

Round 9

Cazares is jabbing with his right, getting close, and threatening to uncork his left but not actually doing it. Cazares seems to be shoring up his reserves more now. Diaz gets bold and peppers him with left jabs to push him into a corner. HARD left by Cazares, gets Diaz's respect again. Now Cazares kills more time, circling around for a while before lunging in with a left hand and getting countered with a right.

Round 10

Cazares is leaping in with left hands, committed to them, unrelenting, and he finally nails Diaz with one on the bridge of the nose, shattering cartilage!! Diaz's gum shield is knocked out. Time out to replace, probably giving Diaz a lucky break. Cazares immediately back on him. Right hooks and high left hands. Body shots from Cazares as Diaz tries to lean in on him. Left uppercut jumping forward by Cazares. Diaz pushes out a jab but Cazares brushes it aside like a minor annoyance with his right glove. Cazares plugs a loud left to the body. Diaz has his guard tightened, looking unwilling to open up. Left hand up top by Cazares, and a right hook getting in around the side. Cazares staying off Diaz's jab.

Round 11

Cazares is jumping up with right hooks and landing hard on the back of Diaz's left glove as it remains glued to his head. Diaz is rocked by a rocket of a left hand but keeps his composure and jabs back out at Cazares to hold him at range. Cazares is in no hurry to finish him off, content to throw single power punches coming up off his feet every half minute or so and satisfied with the fact that he's either landing and hurting or scaring Diaz every time he does so.

Round 12

Cazares throws a wild left hand and misses, as Diaz tries to time him with a right uppercut but also comes up empty handed. Cazares rocks him with a right hook, left hand combo springing forward. Cazares ducks a left hook backing out. Lead right into the guard by Diaz, showing a bit of urgency here at the very end. Cazares throws a spirited but sloppy combo, piston shots to the body and a slicing left at vaguely chin level.
