Sorry to crash this CPA conference but all the money in the World cannot buy you respect. Geale just took the more comfortable path in terms of purse and opponent when he opted for Mundine. If he had taken the Golovkin and won his immediate and future purse's would have been huge, considering he would have been showcased on HBO and an automatic draw for American viewers.

In keeping with the economic theme; Does anyone know what Geale made for his two fights post Mundine?

My point being: Even if he lost to GGG and put up a good show he would have still had the Mundine fight available among other high profile bouts that HBO would have gladly picked up. In truth; Geale probably hurt his long term earning potential by taking the route he did.

Taking the $2m in a comparatively easy fight against Mundine and at the same time retaining his IBF title was a no brainer compared to earning far less in a life and death fight against Golovkin.

The $2m was there for the taking, and if Geale hadn't have held a world title his fight against Mundine would not have been guaranteed, nor would the amount.

I don't think he would have made anything like $1m for fighting GGG, and even if he had have, simple mathematics shows he would have banked towards double taking the far easier Mundine option.

I believe Geale will very likely meet GGG in the future. In the mean time the huge purse he collected for beating Mundine is earning interest.

Its not about being a CPA, but prize fighters fight for prizes and taking an easy bout for a lot of money compared to a hard bout for less money is understandable. Would I have rather seen the GGG bout? yes.

Boxing is a physically demanding sport, and I just dont like seeing hate/disrespect piled on fighters for making sensible financial decisions. They are the ones who have to live in a long retirement after taking thousands of shots to the head, with whatever they were able to accumulate during their career.

I agree that Geale took the easier route because he was not confident enough, or his management wasnt, that he could beat GGG and was afraid his purse/negotiating position with Mundine would be lessened should he have lost.

But that does not mean he does not want the fight, is afraid of the fight, or is a coward. Maybe it was not even the best route, but most people boxers or otherwise make some mistakes in their career and retirement planning. Its not being an armchair CPA to say the hate/derision is unwarranted.
