Geale almost certainly has a better resume than any current top 10 MW, spare for Sergio...

And who you fought and how you did is all that matters.

    ---

Also, I don't know of anyone who thought he'd beat GGG or even be competitive except for a couple obvious trolls.

As for being overrated; no. He was deservedly the 2nd ranked MW in the world entering the Barker fight based on his accomplishments and not theoretical H2H.

People who are saying he was overrated in terms of skills are also off. Even your biggest Geale fan (I'm a pretty big one) would tell you that he accomplished and fought far beyond what he seemed to have physically.

Kinda this^, though I don't like to sound disrespctful. I mean, they're not average obviously, they're all kinda top 10 guys in the division, but none of them are exceptional in the way that Maravilla was and Golovkin (to my eyes at least), is.

Geale's got decent skills, and he's a tough battler, but he'll never be more than a fairly forgettable short tenure belt-holder (in the larger scheme).

Think you might be unfair or at least a bit hasty to Macklin....there was nothing "Average" about his performances against Sturm and Sergio.
Excessive emphasis is put on his getting destroyed by GGG.
Fair enough if he goes on to lose more fights......but let's not write him off just yet.
Many past greats were destroyed by a "nemesis" opponent, but people don't write them off because of it.
For example Ken Norton and Joe Frazier were wiped out by Foreman....etc

Perhaps Macklin has been a bit unlucky, and perhaps people like Barker and particularly Murray have been quite lucky....

I'm a fan of Macklin and would favour him to beat both Murray and Barker, I agree those two (especially Murray) have looked better than they actually are mainly down to their respective fights against Sergio, who was devasting a few years ago but seems to be struggling of late against big middleweights. Macklin should have beat Sturm whereas Murray was lucky to get the draw so I can see where you're coming from.

Average when compared to a fighter like Golovkin is what I should have said.

    Harsh OP.

    This. :good

His work rate, durability, and stamina were up to world championship snuff - but little else. His speed was more than average for a middleweight, but not blinding. His power is lacking at that level, and he was never too versatile or clever or especially sound defensively.

    :good

    MW division is very limited
after Martinez goes, the main players seem to all be 30+, and the one who's getting all the rave reviews hasn't fought anyone yet

geale is definitely limited, but deserves major props for how he put himself on the map

    Fair play loughlan.
I have been thinking this for a while now, and I'm delighted to hear someone else feels that way too.

Take their respective last fights out of the equation and Macklins cv is a lot more impressive than Barker.

Macklin and Murray fought basically the same Sturm (only a few months apart) and despite getting a gift draw, Murray was well beaten by Sturm

Macklin fought a Sergio who by his own admission was at his peak for their fight. I was there for it and I agree.
without a doubt the Sergio that fought Murray was only a shadow of the Sergio that Macklin fought.

Murray lost to Sturm clearly, and had huge injury and size advantages in two of his main fights, Blackwell and Sergio.

PS can anyone confirm, was Nick Blackwell injured when he fought Murray????

That was clearly the best performance of Barker's career. The result was a SD, and that only happened because of a judge mysteriously giving Barker the 12th. I thought Geale won but, of course, it could have gone either way.

It's not as clear, just my opinion, but I think Geale had a somewhat off night as well. I don't think he was moving as well as he can. On the other hand, he was fortunate to get a KD, so maybe that balances it out.

In any case, if a top 5 MW like Barker has the best night of his career and comes away with a narrow win, I'm not sure how that makes Geale look too bad.
