This guy is hardly remembered. One of the biggest overachievers I've witnessed. True, he was a favorite son of the WBC and seemed to get title shots handed to him each time he lost a WBC title. But, he peformed at a high level for 15 yrs. He was pretty consistent and did the best with what talent he had.
One of the most exciting events I've ever been to was the night Zaragoza beat Wayne McCullough at Hynes Auditorium in Boton. The crowd was heavily Irish and pulling for Wayne, who was a big favorite. I was rooting for Zaragoza. It was a wild, screaming affair, and Daniel just out-maneuvered and outworked the challenger. I can't remember the official scores, but from my vantage point it was not that close. It was a frigid mid-winter night and my friend and I went through hell getting back home, as all the buses had stopped running and there weren't many cabs. But it was damn well worth it.
