Vincenzo La Femina vs. Oleksandr Youriévitch Egorov, 8 rounds @ super bantamweight

 

La Femina, nicknamed "Winchester" is a 27 year old Campanian taking a big step up here against Egorov. Before this current 0-5 skid, the now 33 year old Ukrainian had a tidy record of 20-1-1, losing only to Gavin McDonnell in his first decade in the pros and capturing several minor belts.

 

VLF up two zip, but has brawled far more than he needs to. He did well drawing the lead from Egorov and making him miss & pay when he set his mind to it, and in fact buzzed him whenever he did that. For some reason though, despite having those boxing skills in his back pocket, he lets himself get easily sucked into firefights where his defensive IQ plummets.

 

Egorov twatted down by a cuffing left hook while fleeing a corner with the better part of a minute left and then gets pelted with loud body shots reverberating through Allianz Cloud Arena down the stretch. He makes it to his stool but his corner may want to start thinking about rescue.

Could be a pride thing here as Egorov has only ever been stopped once (TKO7 at the hands of Evgenii Liashkov of Russia in January) but..Egorov is getting absolutely pasted here. Winchester just teeing off with everything in the book and landing what he likes, to head and body. Egorov gamely picking off what he can and stumbling away, throwing desperate overhand counters when his back hits the ropes, but... this needs to be stopped, either by his team or the ref.

 

Round 4 was a 10-8, even without a knockdown, just beaten from pillar to post. If this isn't a RTD4 and they send him out again, his coach better ask for him to show them something very early in the 5th on pain of white towel. Or else they will be culpable for whatever happens...

 

VLF hunts Egorov down and floods him with hooks at the head and powerful digs on the body, and Egorov is down again. The ref has an opportunity here to make it mercifully academic..but lets it continue. Egorov being abused here, just won't give up. Can't even successfully move in to clinch, being flung off by La Femina who then just continues hailing both fists in from different angles, landing around, below and on top of Egorov's rigid goal posts. Egorov bouncing around on his toes, eyes swollen, putting out defensive jabs to buy himself a couple of unharried steps, but La Femina is just battering him from long range, target practice with jabs from stomach to mouth.

Amazing it has gone this long. (not a positive connotation of the word amazing, either)

La Femina weighed in 123½ and Egorov 123¼.

Nigerian vs. Irish, surely there have been loads of such match-ups before with both countries producing so many boxers; drawing a blank on examples though...

 

Surprisingly dominant opener for the underdog O'Brien, keeping Nmomah turning on a spit and paralyzed with the jab and 1-2.
