He is the best fighter from of the three of them...he should have been the headline years ago but we all know what the score is in ozzie boxing. World class fighters get in line...the circus gets first dibs.
Hey vic, wanna get noticed? Want to draw the same crowds as green and mundine. Get john williamson to sing a few tunes when you enter the ring and drape yourself in the aussie flag. Then thank your wife and kids, tell all the crowd how much you love them, then tell everyone mundine is a pissant and you"ll be our new favourite son. Works everytime.
Now if we can just get Dibb v Asiku Kickett v Elomar Tomilson v Eadie On the U/C That shouldn't be hard:yep It will the greatest card in the history of Oz boxing:good
As has been mentioned previously, its strange the wider public took to Kostya but not to Vic. Its a quandry I have no answer for. Possibly the marginalistaion of the sport here since full PPV came into effect but I remember many a packed pub across the country when KT fought.
The quandry is easily answered Leon... Fenech's career was at the point of a serious downward slope.. Tszyu fought on the undercard of Fenech/ Nelson in his pro debut.. His own national interest was unavoidable due to huge media splashes right from the offset. He was in the Johnny Lewis stable with 'break even' Bill doing the mind work and setting a good path to showcase KO after KO of high calibre opponents. A nice retirement package for Mordey and Lewis.. and something to continue focus on for Aussie fans. Vic has been far from over exposed in the media, especially in Victoria.. There's barely a mention of Vic.. win, lose or draw.
But the difference is what? Both have a similar stalking style, big punch and high KO ratio. Both speak in broken English. Why did KT take off and Vic fights in relative obscurity? Bill Mordey? The changing climate of PPV? Can Dilshod Mahmudov be the next breakthrough? Similar pedigree... Am I asking too many questions? Should I shut up? Do I need a lie down? Its all too confusing...
Mate.. difference being, Mordey and Lewis were the faces of Oz boxing. Rowsell got more media exposure in this country than both Kats and Vic combined.. Boxing was at a fkn high point after the Vegas rip off and the tail of Harding career (which recieved little of the deserved plaudits... Vic at bantam means little negatives.. he could be a bull ant and draw thousands if promoted well.. Fighting the majority, if not all, high calibre fights overseas prior to establishing a massive national fan base is detremental to his own status here.. Robbie Peden alteast took on Cambell in Oz to grab the Jnr Lightweight crown. National interest is too focussed on the failings of Mumdream and Argies to keep up to date with Vics happenings. Pretty fkn sad really.. Vic and Kostya are two of the few boxers who take challenges and unify divisions.. Publicity and timing might be a total blame for this?? Had Vic arrived on the scene to coinside with Kostya debut.. wow.. if only!!
vic should have stayed fighting in oz longer. he did fight on a few green undercards. now has to "stick with" the usa as he has created market there. too late to build oz as a serious ppv in own right. on green v hopkins undercard would ensure hbo or whotime took it and paid good dollars!
Whats the deal though?? Is this country big enough to carry Vic, Kats, Mundine, Green etc at one time? If Vic stayed here, would Donaire, Arce or Mijares been matched?? Same with Kats. NOOOOO!!. Philos, Thais and Argies would still be dished on platters.. The best we can legitimately hope for is seeing a top class match concerning Vic in Oz this coming year... Green on the same card as Vic.. yep, fkn spectacular.. yet Greens future is limited to the next 12 months or his next bout. Should Green get the better of B.Hop, the bargaining power is irreversably in Hyder/Nassers (Elias, not Camel Toes) court. Once Green is out of the picture Vic might take national precedant over Danny? The Mundine sewerage truck will continue topping itself with international faecal matter whilst Kats is unable to return home. In the mean time, O-O will be stepping up, as will Lenny Zapp.. Wil Tomlinson would provide huge interest if matched accordingly like the last bout also. Might be a Phil Austin Stomach Annum.. A Goodyear..
Very correct statements here from Flamengo. I remember Kostya's debut very well on the Fenech Nelson undercard as I was at the Sydney Football Stadium where Mordey managed to have over 15,000 watching the fight on the big-screen! Further than just the 37,000 watching it live at Princess Park in Melbourne. Unbelivable! Jeff, Bill and Johnny were the boxing media, and wider mainstream media's 'go to men'. Maybe a lot of people don't know this or have forgotten, but Bill was an established media man / journalist in his own right, hence he knew how to cultivate a story and continue the coverage. Johnny Lewis was being hand-picked to train the Australian Rugby League team, hence his profile, outside of boxing was always been seen and promoted well. Jeff was Jeff and up to the point of being robbed in Vegas, he was winning and winning superbly and the classic, 'loving youse all'. Vic's problem (and only my opinion), is certainly not ability (has tonnes of it), it's that there's no humbleness, he's always 'ze killing, I vill knock him out, feeling my power', etc, etc like we have all taken the **** off on here, and to put it frank, the media and wider public just get bored with the same over and over. I actually spoke with a journo friend of mine and he said he could write an article without even talking to Vic, hence the answers are always the same, different opponent name! Kostya was always saying in the media how he loved Australia, the opportunities it brought him and his family and this is something you have never seen from Vic, ever. It's not a critisicm, just a simple observation. I remember once seeing a news grab which you don't think much about at the time, but it was of Kostya and his wife going to English lessons, hence Bill Mordey had the media showcasing his boy to the Australian public that he was becoming one of 'us', learning the language, etc, etc. Vic could never 'sell' a PPV here as a stand-alone, not in a million years, but as a co-feature/main-support to Danny, it would be sensational for all concerned. I'm sure if it's a Sunday 'day' show, Showtime whom Vic has a great relationship with would want to pick it up and showcase it to the US being Saturday night there time. I hope it happens for Australian boxing, what a night if it can. Makes Mandy and Sonny Bill look severely second-rate!
