I think most people on here understand the word 'mandatory'. I think they also understand that, because being mandatory challenger is bestowed upon a boxer by a governing body (and by 'bestowed' I mean paid for, normally) it doesn't really mean that much anymore.

The concept of mandatory challengers was devised in the 1970s to force champions to face their toughest opponents rather than go down the 'bum of the month' route. But now, with four main governing bodies, the toughest opponents are usually holders of rival belts, often with rival promoters and off limits when it comes to matchmaking.

The mandatory challenger ruling is also used to strip fighters of belts, should a governing body so wish. Like in the case of Tyson Fury, the IBF knew he had a rematch clause with Wlad and knew he couldn't take on Glaskov because of the water tight contract he'd signed to get his world title shot. Glaskov's mandatory wasn't awarded to make that fight happen, it was award to get the belt from Fury.

I'm not entirely sure of the specifics, but title holders are also allowed to request the deferral of mandatory fights and governing bodies have it in their power to grant that wish if they are sympathetic (and by 'sympathetic' I mean paid for, normally) to the reasons for its request. So mandatory doesn't really mean mandatory at all. It's all part of the rich tapestry of boxing politics really.

i honestly believe if we look back at threads about the wbc, canelo/cotto and ggg from a few months ago....hed be one of those guys who would say "well i actually believe the wbc is going to honor its word" when everyone and their brother tried to warn ggg fanboys about the wbc

and now hes like "the wbc ordered khan/garcia"

 

I think khan is an awesome talent but Danny doesn't need him at the moment objective fan would much rather see him fight guys like porter Thurman spence heck Bradley PAC etc etc
