You'd be surprised by how big of a fan base Morales still has. Garcia's team obviously wanted what they would consider an "easy" first defense against a high profile opponent to milk the belt a bit and get Danny some visibility. Assuming that he can get past Morales , you'll likely see him get it on with Matthysse-Olusegun, then Peterson or Rios(assuming he can establish himself at 140).
I know what they're all doing, I was saying he had the time and all the juice at 140 right now to fight anyone he wanted, save maybe JMM. So why mess with a rematch, a lot of people probably don't really care to see. Basically why didn't his management team advise him to vacate the title, to avoid this fight, so they could concentrate on someone more relevant at the moment. This rematch just isn't necessary, and does little to nothing to advance his career. Honestly he could hurt the hype he built with the Khan KO, if he doesn't win impressively. Which if Morales comes to fight this time, and is in shape, I don't know that Garcia can do it.
Sorry, I just feel it would make more sense to move forward, after that star making performance. Rather than go backwards, to me it makes more sense to just vacate the paper title. HBO does a damn fine job of letting the casual fans know who are the belt holders, and who is the real champ. Vacating the title (like Sergio) and fighting someone like Rios or Khan (again) does more for his star imo. That's all I'm saying. I understand what the reason is for having Garcia vs Morales II, I just don't understand why him and his team are choosing to stand in place, when Danny's THE man at 140 right now. He should be striking while the iron is hot imo, that's all.
They're not standing in place. They don't have a choice. If they wanted to fight morales the first time they had to agree to a rematch clause. Morales decided to use the rematch clause. If Garcia said no it would be a breach of contract and he could nbe sued. They have no choice but to fight morales.
I see. However, I really don't understand too much about how the business side works. So basically if they went the way I suggested, and vacated the title, Erik Morales could sue him? I figured, Morales would just fight someone else for the vacated title
Garcia said Morales gave him a shot so he`s returning the favour. Morales is a legend & gave Garcia a tough fight, a lot tougher than the supposed best fighter in the division, Amir Khan. Let Morales have one last shot at glory, its not like Garcia is on borrowed time & only has a couple of fights left, he`s a young, fresh fighter & if he is the real deal then he should in theory beat Morales again, this time more convincingly.... & if Garcia can`t beat Morales then it proves that it was right to give Erik the rematch. Its all good by me to have this fight again, I just hope Morales doesn`t get blown out early or any **** like that though... its always a possibility considering the circumstances. These type of fights rarely have a fairytale ending, boxing is as real as it gets.
As others have pointed out there was a match clause but even if there was'nt this rematch still should've and probabley would've been made anyway due to the closeness of the first fight and the fact morales was out of shape after coming off a surgery just too months previously
Garcia aint ****, no wonder he chose to fight Morales again like a ***** Cant wait to see him exposed, Khan would destroy him in a rematch
Khan is a headcase, and coincidentally he's done. Your boy will never, be the elite fighter his fans seem to think he is.
lol Khan got schooled. And this is a rematch that Garcia has no choice but to accept. Garcia will knock out glass Jaw khan yet again. lol @ khan being p4p top ten. too funny.
