Fair enough, at least he trusts his natural instinct enough to go with it. No doubt his wife will be rapt.
Are you willing to consider the possibility that Green just isn't a real fighter? He fell short in all his big fights and often pulled out of fights, now he retires before even 1 defence of his paper title, Garay was coming to fight and Green couldn't handle the thought of losing his title he just bought so he called it a day, i think Green knows he isn't a real fighter and he overachieved with what he has.
Yeah second that. It's an unfortunate and confusing situation, but I guess if he ain't all there he shouldnt be fighting.
Mundine's resume shits all over Greens mate. He's fought the better fighters, and the bigger punches out of the two. I've never excused Mundine for fighting stiffs recently, so I don't know why you brought that up while replying to me. If his decision is because of the birth of his 2nd, then thats pretty weak also, as he would have known this was going to happen 9 months ago. I'm not buying that as an excuse for him retiring just weeks before a fight. If he feels he hasn't got it in him anymore, than that tells me that he's filled with a fair bit of self doubt of what he can do in the ring. I could name more than a couple of fighters Green has ran from when Mundine has faced them.
I know you've really seized on this whole "he thought he would lose to Garay" thing lefty, but no, I don't believe that is the case at all. I know you don't think he's a "real fighter" but no one gets as far in the world of boxing if they can't fight - otherwise we'd be seeing all those guys on Fenech's Fight Nights with world titles by now. No, he didn't fall short in all of his big fights - he shocked Beyer and was robbed on a technicality - dispute this as being my opinion, but it's no less fact than your claim of his performances in big fights. He thumped Lucas for the interim SMW title, and he beat Drews for the legit WBA LHW title. I know you think his title is a paper title, but he did win it legitimately from the legit champ, so no, it's isn't a paper title. A paper title is what Mundine has held 3 times - once when he beat Echols for the vacant WBA second-tier title because Ottke had been elevated to superchamp status when he unified vs Mitchell, once when he inherited the full WBA title when Ottke retired, and once when he fought Soliman for the vacant second-tier WBA title when Kessler unified vs Beyer and was elevated to superchamp status. Green's interim title that he gained by beating Lucas is comparable to any title Mundine has held/holds. So no, the thoughts that you have suggested have not entered my head, as I don't believe Green has as little self-confidence/belief in his abilities as you think.
Yeah yeah yeah, and I can also say that Kessler ran from Green when Green won the purse bid to fight him in Perth, I can also say that Echols was an over-rated MW, Ottke was a feather-fisted hometown Harry who still managed to KO Mundine, Siaca was a joke of an opponent who still managed to beat Mundine in arguably the most boring fight I've ever seen, I can say that a 60% Kessler beat the **** out of Mundine in his hometown, that Mundine has feasted on blown up MW's, retirees, alcoholics and neverbeens to pad his record, that Mundine quits when the going gets tough, while Green fights through severe dehydration and delusions of losing because his desire to win is that strong, that Green wins bravery awards for saving people in the surf while Mundine tries to buy his way into heaven with his charity work and bidding for the first box of cherries each year, etc. And knowing you've got a child on the way from 9 mths out doesn't mean a bloody thing mate - the way I felt the minute my daughter was put in my arms by the nurses on the day she was born was not anticipated by me in the slightest. Green's got a bigger heart than Mundine.
One thing I will say about Green and I'm a big fan is that he isn't that mentally strong compared to Mundine. We can all agree Mundine acts like an ass, fights bums etc. but when they got it on he handled the pressure a lot better than Danny did.
Just got this email from Justin Manolikos:- It is with great disappointment yet pride I confirm that as of today Danny "Green Machine" Green has retired from professional boxing. Having been a two time and two weight division world champion Danny goes down in the record books as one of Australia's greatest ever fighters. Danny always wanted to retire on top and that he has! He wishes to thank his family, his sponsors and all his loyal supporters who have never let him down. He also thanks those "doubters and kickers" that drove him to two world titles! Best wishes This content is protected This content is protected This content is protected This content is protected This content is protected
Seeing as you're comparing (and the history books will always compare Green and Mundine) I think that it's fair to say that what Green lacked in natural ability he made up for with heart and determination - pretty much sums up the majority of boxers IMO. In contrast to that Mundine will be remembered as a very naturally gifted boxer but lacked the heart and desire that drives most boxers and there'll be a footnote that also adds that he suffered from the inherited Mundine glass jaw.
The biggest loser here is Garay who had his opportunity to claim a world title snatched away from him (at least for now) only weeks before the fight. Green should never have signed for the fight if he had any doubts at all. And if he didnt have ANY doubts back then its even more baffling that he now has enough doubt ("protecting myself..." implying he is expecting to get hurt...) to go as far as totally retiring from the sport. And you guys are still misunderstanding me, I have nothing against Green and have never really bagged him in past (nor am i a mundine nuthugger) but this is not a respectable way to go out - I would have reacted the same way for any other fighter.
Too much double standards there. Answer this...What would your reaction be if Mundine retired in the same fashion if he was due to face his mandatory in a few weeks?! He's also never cancelled out of fights, while Green has more than a few times now. When has Mundine quit when the going got too tough?! Too harsh on Siaca also. If you compare his record at the time he faced Mundine, it's very similar to Garay's in the essence that he lost very close fights in world title fights. the charity/good will deeds that both do outside the ring are irrelevant, and don't need to be brought into discussion. Why bring that up? You can go over records between the two all day, but the bottom line is that Mundine's faced better opposition, beaten better opposition, and beaten Green with ease.
I think we all know there would be other issues at hand here, it's not your, or my, business to sook and whinge and hate just because maybe some of us think we deserve to know everything and every fact about every boxer because we have lots of posts on a boxing website. Leave it be, he has done it for his reasons, not your reasons, not your business, not your place to cry.
Danny had a great career and great Aussie bloke, I wish I'm the best in the future and thanks for all the great fights
