It's official, at the age of 35, Australian power puncher Danny Green decided it's time to retire from the sport. "I am getting out on my terms, with my dignity and respect intact," Green said. "I have made the decision of an intelligent man - looking to 25 years in the future. There was talk of me retiring after the Anthony Mundine fight. I knew I had more to offer and I am very glad I trusted my instincts." - he said. What is very interesting that according to FN, Green looked impressive last week in sparring sessions as he was preparing for his mandatory again Hugo Garay on April 27, one month from now... the fight was signed, he prize was probably good and all of the sudden he retires? Someone has to explain that to me... that so weird that there has to be something behind the scenes...
I remember him taking some huge shot in a sparring session against James Toney, who knows, but its not like he was a huge player in the division anyway. He should have won the first Beyer fight, but his been downhill ever since, he never really made any noize outside of Australia.
Maybe he realized it's too late for him at this stage to make any serious noise or improvements so why continue? He could've found something other than boxing to go for instead as well so best of luck to him.
Pretty **** option IMO, although its a very tough sport and i totally respect his decision. Garay is a very good, in your face type fighter. Maybe Green couldn't see himself winning a war anymore. Maybe he didn't look the goods in sparring? Who knows really. It certainly looked like he still had more in him at this stage.
WOW thats a suprise and odd timing, but if a man's heart isn't in it better he jumps ship than stay for the money and get beat up
retiring as a "champion" is special. Good for him, most fighters can never do what he did. I hope he's healthy and happy.
God I thought it was Briggs that was going to retire...after he had squared off with Green! I felt they were gearing up for an Aussie mega fight...read it somewhere.
The Light Heavyweight picture reduces: Hopkins, Erdei, Clinton-Tarver winner, Johnson-Dawson winner, Jones and Calzaghe.
why he looked sensational against griffin he is the best australian fighter after mundine which he said he wanted a rematch...AND has a chance of winning i thought he was top 5 even top 3 at the mo....strange strange strange
agreed, also a victory or at least good showing against Garay, would have boosted his standing in the eyes of many, but now further question marks hang over him when debating his achievements.
If he was looking sharp and impressive in sparring, it's hard to believe that somehow he realized he's not good enough anymore... A few weeks ago there were talks about a unification fight vs. WBO champ Zsolt Erdei so you can't say he was looking for a retirement fight... It's either a health or a serious mental problem or... sorry guys, we can't rule that out, but maybe he got caught using something?
Should have fought Erdei in an unification fight before retiring. I just hope he doesn't make a come back after a few years.
Perhaps he found one morning that he was having trouble remembering something, or went into a training session and had totally nothing etc. Often in boxing declines are slow, but now and again boxers really do age overnight. Luckily for Green, it happened in camp and not in the ring; all credit to him for being able to quit while he's still winning.
