Dave Meltzer on Danny Hodge, a guy would in his prime would have been a monster in MMA. http://sports.yahoo.com/mma/news;_y...?slug=dm-dannyhodge021210&prov=yhoo&type=lgns
Yeah, he would have kicked most people's ass. That's probably about the best resume you could have for mma; world class wrestler and very solid am/pro boxing success to go with great physical strength.
Why does Bruce Lee get so much hate for? This is absolutely ridiculous. It shows Lee was right up there as one of the best of his time, because idiots don't let this man rest.
Agreed. Lee worked harder than most any athlete, and just worked so hard you'd thought something was mentally wrong with him. He trained, he studied, he sparred, he was a master. Yeah, maybe he wouldn't have done well in MMA WITHOUT training for it, but with his dedication he could be ready in no time. Honestly though even without training...What 140 pound MMA fighters look like Bruce (say 3 or 4% body fat)? Who really could match strength of his strikes, or take his strikes? I know the man never wrestled, but he had raw strength for his size, and that's hard to beat. If you don't believe me check out Lesnar. Yeah, the man used to wrestle, but what he does in MMA isn't wrestle. He grabs somebody with his raw strength, puts them on the ground, holds them down, and embarrases them with those funny punches. So, even Bruce Lee without training I would stick against most 140 pounders in MMA. Against a well accomplished wrestler, Bruce Lee would have to strike quickly, or he's probably going to tap.
I think it something to do with all the acolytes who make grandiose statements without any real evidence other than the testimony of those with vested interests. The use of hearsay as dogma & the excessive casual postulation of his more deluded followers encourages disdain and excessive criticism.
Danny Hodge is one of the best American athletes in history. I believe a few other people have sort of done his feat in reverse; winning a world title in boxing and having something like an AAU national title in wrestling. Proving, of course, that cross training was not invented by a cha cha dancing aspiring actor in the 1970s.
A good wrestler beats a strong wrestler any day. It's not like wrestlers just do power lifting all day long and then cave man around on the mat. There's ton's of technique, balance and developing the feel of grappling that doesn't have to do with pure strength and can't just be picked up quickly like it's nothing. Put Lesnar in there with whoever you can find that's stronger than him who didn't win the wrestling titles that he did and I'll still take Lesnar to win with his grappling. Lee was a physical specimen and had some great ideas, but more than a fighter he was an actor. And just so you know, I did JKD for years and loved it. I'm just being realistic and applying what MMA has shown us about what techniques are most efficient and what skill set is typically most valuable.
In your pictures of these mythical matchups, does it matter to you at all what Lee's opponents can do? Hodge is clearly an all-time great athlete with loads of skill and accomplishment. If you're just going to dismiss ANYONE as having no chance then you should just say so and go play with your Bruce Lee action figures and leave the actual reasoned discussion to the adults.
