Danny Hornsby Talks UCC 3; Promising More Quality Shows At UCC's 4&5

Last weekend, the UCC held their third event, 'Night Breed' in Blackpool. This has come under criticism from a few angles, but promoter Danny Hornsby reckons this is undeserved, and that considering the build up to the card and things that went right on the night, the show was more of a success story than a failure.

Some tasty snippets:

"The Blackpool show has had a bit of criticism," admitted Danny. "That show had a fifteen fight card, but due to injuries and other excuses it ended up being a ten fight card. A few people have moaned about a few fights finishing early, and the opponents not being the best for some of the fighters. Promoting is a very, very hard game. I do take criticism on board, but sometimes, I don't find it very fair.

"Let's take Brendan Loughnane for instance. We had a fight lined up for him against Mike Egan; a really good opponent that's a strong Thai boxer and Brendan was really excited about it. A week before, I get a phone call saying he's hurt his shin sparring. Brendan isn't an easy lad to match up as it is; it's very difficult. He'd won eight out of eight, and at the last minute I had to pull someone in.

"There are a couple of people on the internet that were complaining about it, but I'd love someone to find me a pool of fighters to fight Brendan, because they're not there. Hats off to Shaun Law. He turned up, and Brendan did destroy him, but at least Brendan got another run out, got the feel for it again and did what he had to do.

"Saul Rogers was another one. He'd had seven contest, with six of those being wins and one draw. We had a match for him against a lad called Tom Harris, who was apparently from Leicester Shootfighters. He lied to me and apparently wasn't from there; then we couldn't get hold of him. We got a few more names together which we put to Aaron Chatfield at the Colloseum, and he accepted the opponents, but when they did their homework on Saul they didn't want to know.

"Shaun Lomas' gym put a fighter forward that had had two fights; won one and lost one, who happened to fall at the first hurdle as soon as Saul attacked him. Were we to know that was going to happen though?

"It's alright to have all this criticism in hindsight, but we weren't to know that these lads were going to fold after the first kick. Promoting's hard enough as it is without people who don't know how hard we work, and all the phone calls saying stuff like the last fight was a fix. I've never had any intention to fix a fight. Karl Etherington is the number one Judo player in this country; he's the best and has been for years. He fights all over. The kid he fought has a K1 background and a respectable record. Karl used a great Judo move to finish the fight fairly, and to say it was a fix is disrespectful in my eyes.

"We did well with Blackpool considering the hurdles in place, and we take criticism fairly. Any that we think is fair, and we will fix it and put it right, but don't disrespect the lads because they train hard, and you can't knock those who take fights on the last minute either. The venue was busy, and we'll be there again very soon. We were happy with Blackpool, and even though the standard wasn't as good as Manchester, we will get there.

"UCC 5 has really got me excited. Brendan Loughnane vs. Murat Polat is 100% happening. Alex Minogue vs. Andy Evans is also 100% on. We're in talks about who Leigh Cohoon will fight, but it will be a very good opponent. Murat vs. Brendan and Alex vs. Andy say it all, and everyone wants to know who the best ones are out of those. UCC 5 will be the best one yet. When the card's out, people can see for themselves how good it will be."
