De La Hoya has just retired but it might not take too long to find the next Golden Boy. Here's Danny "The Golden Child" Jacobs, and he might come to age on Friday night on ESPN2 when he steps up in competition to face tough Nicaraguan Jose Varela. Exactly the kind of opposition the 22-year old needs at this stage of his career, after 14 fights, all ended in a win, 13 by stoppage.

Although he's far from the contender level, Varela will be his first legitimate test, someone with decent experience, coming to win and not easy to break down. He was stopped by Julio and Rubio, but went 12 with Miranda.

Will The Golden Child come to age and be the new Golden Boy?

I've thought for a while that jacobs will be a star, he definetly looks the best of the young up and comers at the moment, fast hands, puts his combinations together well, knock out power, you can but only be impressed by hi so far.

Needs to step up the competition now and glad to see he is doing that, will be intresting to see how handles the step up.

Kind of pathetic to think that a guy like Valera is a big step up for an highly regarded prospect with already 14 fights on his record. I guess that's what he gets for fighting super stiffs since the beginning of his career. It was about freaking time for a step up.

Good for him. Hopefully he continues to improve the level of his opposition at a steady pace in the future.

Jacobs has only been a pro for less that a year and a half though and is only 22, they have bought him along at the right pace so far IMO but its time to begin to really push him up the levels and see how he handles it, friday will be a good marker to see where he's at

i dont think so at all, i've only seen him once but he didn't look great when i saw him, he looked for a prospect though but.......hardly a runner up for "the next big thing"

but on a positive note, he's a MW right? that divisions so watered down that he may get himself a title, but then again he'll probably go up a division or 2 as he continues to grow as a boxer, so maybe not

I'll say it again, If he's half as good as he was an amateur, He'll be a Top 10 P4Per.

He'll probably end up getting owned by one of the european top amateurs from his days as an am.

I doubt it but lord knows, I can't remember off the top of my head any euro ams.

I think him vs Korobov will be a big money fight in a few years.

If people think Jacobs is taking it slowly, Boo Boo Andrade is a LONG ways away.
