I actually see this fight happening in 2018 saunders doesn't want to risk himself against Jacobs. Before he gets a crack at ggg or canelo. It be a good fight Sullivan can ko Jacobs if given the chance but Jacobs is to athletic for o Sullivan. Jacobs ko in 7
Great fight for Jacobs to take right now, as Spike is riding high on a couple of dominant televised performances (including his career best) and is as highly rated and regarded as his ceiling might permit, not to mention enjoying the vicarious shine of the only two men to beat him also doing pretty well for themselves at the moment - but as a Spike fan I hate the idea of this. Stylistically this is a HUGE mismatch in Jacobs, favor. I think Spike has more than adequate power that he could probably turn Jacobs lights off if he landed a peach like Pirog did; problem is he, while underrated by some in the skill department, simply isn't a tenth as good as Pirog was. His style is made to order for Jacobs to school him en route to either a shutout or a butchered-face TKO. Jacobs would get a currently somewhat hot middleweight name tacked onto his record, while all of Spike's recent momentum - building up to either a hoped-for Saunders rematch or a lucrative FOTY contender (albeit perhaps career shortening beat-down along with that, in the end) with GGG - would he undone.
I don't hate spike. Sooner or later he's gonna face someone at the top. Be it Charlo ggg lemy dereveycgenko saunders. Heck more than likely Oscar might be saving Sullivan for canelos first defense title if canelo gets passed saunders. But it's spikes faith he will face someone at the top again he will have one last chance
I'd rather see him ride this little career high all the way to a BJS II or GGG payday, personally, but I've got a soft spot for him.
yeah its always a bit tricky in these situations as to what a guy should do....whats the best option etc. Sort of a case of 'be careful what you wish for etc etc'. A couple of years ago Andy Lee was touted as a possible opponent for a then prime GGG - and we all know how that would have gone! Any of the top 5 guys would butcher Spike IMO - but at 33 he might want to cash out while he can....
I don't think Jacobs represents the highest payday Spike can fetch before the carriage turns into a pumpkin and he's knocked back into his own lane. BJS II and GGG are both much higher potentially, and both could be sold easily to casuals (with the "we've both improved since last time" and "could be FOTY" angles respectively)
Not sure what Spike would bring to GGG, it's all about money now for GGG and Spike brings very little. Like even fighting a Charlo would bring more money than fighting Spike. GGG probably has 2-3 fights left, there's plenty of more opponents I want to see him face than Spike, who would be beaten to a pulp even now. Spike vs Arias would be a good scrap.
DJ's speed would be too much for Spike, he's not getting caught, if he does he's a decent counter-puncher as he shown vs GGG.
